What Does Our Troop Do?
Troop 64 is a part of the Cascadia council of the Boy Scouts of America, and is based in the Sellwood/Moreland area in Southeast Portland, Oregon. We are chartered through the Moreland Presbyterian Church and hold biweekly meetings there from 7 to 8 PM on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month during the school year. In addition we normally have another optional patrol activity and Troop outing like camping, backpacking, rafting, snowshoeing, etc each month on the weekend. We provide a fun and structured environment for middle and high school kids to try new skills, meet new friends, and have exciting adventure as they learn to be prepared for anything that comes their way. New members ages of 11 to 17 are always welcome and you can join up or find out more by contacting us at info@troop64pdx.org. If you're new to scouting and need more information on what its all about check out the below section including the embedded video.
What is Boy Scouts of America?
Boy Scouts of America is the nation's second largest youth organization of scouts and volunteers that was founded in 1908 by Robert Baden Powell as the Boy Scout Association. When a Chicago publisher was lost in a London night, a scout helped him find his way. As thanks, the publisher tried to pay the scout, but he denied the payment stating that he was doing his daily "good turn". The inspired publisher returned, and started the movement we know today as the Boy Scouts of America. Nowadays, younger kids can joing Cub Scouts here, before they turn 11 or enter 5th grade when they can join Boy Scouts.

Recent Trips and Activities
White Water Rafting August 2023
Every year we go on a rafting trip on the Deschutes river. This year we went for two nights and rafted for one whole day. This year the scouts rafted through different kinds of rapids, some in the photos on the slide. One of them, Box Car (class 3) the first rapids you face when rafting this section of the Deschutes entails you paddling to the left of a little drop then letting your boat fall in. The hype is in the Class 4 rapid; Oaks Springs. For the max excitement, you to paddle right over a drop and holding on. Another rapid, Wapanita (class 3) has you go through a rough patch of water with lots of splashes to make sure you get wet.
Beckham Ruhoff Reed College Garden Project – In May, Beckham led a project to build a new set of stairs and an improved pathway for people to access a community garden on the Reed College campus. Colby Vanderbout Hoyt Arboretum Project – In August, Colby led a project to repair a section of trail and install a crib wall and fencing at Hoyt Arboretum.
Camp Meriwether July 2023
This year for our week long extraordinaire of Summer Camp, we attended Camp Meriwether on the Oregon Coast half way in between Tillamook and Pacific City. Every day brought new and exciting adventurous fun. Every scout completed a few Merit Badges and rank advancement requirements complete. The beach was the source of volleyball madness and the opportunity to redirect a stream. Troop 616 from San Diego California shared our campsite and we shared lots of memories playing cards, and hanging out around a camp fire.
Camporee April 2023
Every year in April the Council sets up a weekend of fun and competition between troops called Camporee. This spring, it was held at Powerland Heritage Park just north of Salem. While the drive was over an hour, the fun in the field, scavenger hunt, and many more challenges are just the base for fun at Camporee. While at Powerland Heritage Park, the troop's two patrols divided and then proceeded to conquer the competition. Unlike previous years, this year, we took home two awards for puzzle solving and scavenger hunts.
Silver Falls March 2023
Last March, the troop ventured out to Silver Falls in Silverton, Oregon. While not the main point of interest, the two story lodge cabin allowed lots of room to play games and have fun in the warmth of the fire. We went hiking, and saw a handful of waterfalls, some that you can walk all the way under.
