Mo i Rana is the third largest town in Northern Norway with 26 200 inhabitants. Here you will find spectacular natural phenomena and magnificent scenery side by side with good infrastructure and international business.
The town has employees in public and private business, among other things a department of the National Library. Here you will also find Mo industripark, one of the largest and greenest industrial parks in Norway. This industri is based on access to minerals, renewable energy and good competence.
Mo i Rana is the home town to the Nordland Theatre, South Sami Theatre, and a serie of major music and drama festivals, among others.
Through the establishment of Campus Helgeland, Mo i Rana can offer studies in several university subjects.
Rana's KPI-report indicates green on the society/culture and the environment dimension. Within these two dimensions, Rana has a good score on most indicators. However, the municipality scores bad on some indicators, including high energy consumption and high CO2 emissions, which can be related to the industrial park. Energy consumption on municipal buildings, water leaks, wastewater treatment and high consumption of drinking water also give bad scores, and represent sustainable improvement potential for the municipality.
The economic dimension is yellow, which indicates not sustainable. Indicators that contribute to the yellow result, is mainly connected to transport. Rana has many private vehicles, and no organized car sharing or bicycle sharing. In addition, Rana has a relatively low numbers of low-emission vehicles. Also accessibility of public transport, and a low degree of traffic monitoring on roads and intersections contribute to lower the overall score on economic sustainability.
It will be important to see the results in a local context, such as Rana being an industrial municipality. In addition, it is important to look at the results as a supplement to the municipality knowledge we have locally. Not all indicators in the KPI analysis are relevant for Norwegian cities / municipalities.
