About Karmøy

Karmøy municipality is a large and relatively populous municipality located about halfway between Bergen and Stavanger. It extends some distance into the mainland and borders Haugesund in the north and Tysvær in the east. The municipality has 42,000 inhabitants and 3,200 employees. Every 5 of the inhabitants live in the mainland.

For many, Karmøy's associations are linked to history, not least the Viking Age. Karmøy, with the Karmsundet inside, has a richly documented history. The road to the north, or Norvegen eventually became the name of the country.

Karmøy is the largest municipality in North Rogaland (which in many contexts is referred to as Haugaland), an integrated housing and labor market with approx. 100,000 inhabitants, where Haugesund is the regional center. This means that most of the offers can be found within our own municipality or a short travel distance, such as the airport, college, hospital, large and varied workplaces and an extensive cultural offer.

The business world is traditionally linked to agriculture and fishing. Karmøy is and has been one of the largest fishing municipalities in Norway. Husøy Traffic Port is one of the largest in Western Norway. The fishing port is among the largest in the country. Nevertheless, it is the industrial and service industries that matter most to employment today. Outside of the public sector, most petroleum maritime industries employ most people. Solstad Offshore is one of the largest employers. Otherwise, the municipality has a significant mechanical industry, particularly aimed at maritime and oil activities. Karmøy has the country's only gas distribution company with a low-pressure natural gas network. In addition, the gas flow in the large pipeline systems in the North Sea towards the Continent is controlled from the Gassco control center in Karmøy.

Norsk Hydro, Karmøy factories are among the country's largest producers of aluminum.

Karmøy has no big city despite the population of approximately 42000. It has 3 cities and several local centers , but is no urban municipality. There is a considerable history of culture on the island. Avaldsnes is an attractive destination to explore the first Norwegian royal seat, where you also can be a Viking for a day. On the south side the lovely white wooden houses are located, in Skudeneshavn, which are one of the few protected culture environments in Norway. In the middle of Karmøy you will find the most beautiful sandy beaches, which have been safeguarded and are certified with «Blue flag». That is an international certification, which is given to beaches and marinas who fulfills certain claims of water quality, security, service and environmental information.

Karmøy shows in the survey «Det Norwegian sustainability promise» that the municipality has many good qualities and is a good place to live in. The survey shows simultaneous areas for improvement who are constantly worked on.
