Below are several lessons that I've completed as a part of my coursework at DSU and student teaching.
Reading (3rd Grade)
I created this lesson during my K-3 Reading course. I did not actually teach this lesson, but I did learn a lot while creating it. For this lesson, I tried to create an interactive read aloud in which students are able to listen to a story, predict what is going to happen next, and then be able to answer questions at the end to show understanding and comprehension of the story. As I developed this lesson, I found myself wondering what my responses would be compared to how I predicted a student would respond would differ when I asked questions about the book and about predictions.
Writing (4th Grade)
This lesson plan is a Mini-Lesson that I created during my K-8 Writing Methods course. I did not actually teach this lesson to students, however, we did a mock classroom experience during class, I used this lesson for that. This lesson is all about having students add adjectives to their narrative writing. This lesson was also when I was introduced to adding mentor texts and anchor charts to your lesson plans. One struggle that I found myself in when developing this lesson was making sure I was very intentional with what I wanted my students to do once I let them loose to start working while modeling for them. This class taught me a lot about being very intentional and specific when teaching and doing instruction so you can ensure that all studnets understand your expectations.
Math (3rd Grade)
This Lesson was written in my Math Methods course. I did not teach this lesson to actual students. This lesson is all about students finding perimeter of two dimensional shapes in fun ways. One of the activities they do in this lesson is use paper clips to find the perimeter. This math class has taught me that math isn't something that student should be scared of and the only way to make that happen is about our math mindset and how we delivery content. Students can learn math in very fun ways through games and routines.
Science (Kindergarten)
This lesson was a NGSS based lesson using a 5E lesson plan template. This lesson is about students finding what plants and animals need to survive based on where they live. I did not actually teach this lesson. In this lesson plan students do many hands on thing that keep them engaged and learning. This lesson is very student driven with vary little teacher instruction until the end. This is important because it allows student to explore and find out things for themselves before the teacher gives them answers. The lesson starts off with a notice and wonder activity to bring them in and peak their curiosity.
Level 3 (two weeks of student teaching) at Madison Elementary (Kindergarten- 5th Grade)
During the two weeks of student teaching at Madison Elementary, we had to write and teach five lessons. The lessons above are the 5 I completed.
I was placed in a Technology Classroom that sees grades K-5 and teaches them many skills like coding, typing, games that work on specific content, and internet safety.
Student Teaching (one semester) at Mellette Elementary in Watertown, SD (4th Grade)
During my one semester of student teaching I wrote numerous lesson plans. Here are just a few that range from different subjects; Math, Science, Reading/Writing, and Phonics.
This lesson was the last observed lesson during my student teaching. I went into this lesson with extream confidence and feeling super prepared and I feel it showed in my lesson. This lesson was the 4th lesson of a new unit and students were grasping the new unit flawlessly. Student engagemnt was improving each lesson as well. Each day after the math lesson- students are given a "cool down" where they are asked 1-2 questions that reflect what they learned that day. The data I gathered after this math lesson was good with majority of students getting 100% correct.
This lesson was recorded and turned into my college supervisor where she then "graded" me and I annotated the video myself reflecting on how I think I did. This lesson is reading and writing combined, however the lesson is more writing heavy becuase the student work time is based on the writing lesson. This lesson is shorter than the other lessons due to writing and reading being mini-lessons. During this time of the lesson, the material we have been working on has been going on for quite some time based on how the pacing guide had it. Thus meaning, the students drive to contiue each day was low, so this lessons independent work did not go as smooth as I was wanting, however, students did a great job and completed what was asked of them.
This group of students do well with phonics and knock phonics work out of the park each time. Phonics is a quick and easy lesson each day for this group. During this lesson students were learning that double consonant letters in words can have different sounds. For example the double p in the word apple has the same sound /p/. However, the double g in suggest has two different sounds /g/ /j/. Students grasped this lesson quickly and had fun with it!
This lesson was the first observed lesson during student teaching and the 3rd lesson all together. Thus meaning I went into this lesson feeling quite scared of failure but the students rocked it and it went very well. The students were learning about landslides and decided/brain storming ways to prevent or minimize a landslide from destroying a city or home. This lesson was very student paced due to the fact that the majority of the lesson was them brain storming independently, with a partner, and as a class.
Student Teaching Work Sample (science unit)
During my student teaching experience, I had to create a science unit doing the following; teach 8-11 lessons, give a pre and post assessment, gather data and analyze that data, and give reflections. Linked below is my unit that I created using the support from the 4th grade science curriculm called "Mystery Science".
During the unit, I taught the students 8 lessons all about the "Human Machine" aka the human body and some of its functions.
