On May 29th, 2019 Shreve Elementary School was notified that they have been designated as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. The Lighthouse Certification is a highly-regarded standard set by Franklin Covey. Shreve becomes just the 11th school in the state of Ohio, and the first in the tri-county area, to achieve this prestigious honor. Shreve also joins schools in Brazil, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and Thailand as the 490th Leader in Me Lighthouse School in the world. Administration, staff, and students went through a rigorous certification process conducted by Franklin Covey reviewers and coaches in order to attain this significant benchmark.
According to the website, leaderinme.org, the certification is evidence that schools have produced outstanding results in school and student outcomes, by implementing the process with fidelity and excellence. It is also because of the extraordinary impact that the school is having on staff, students, parents, and the greater community.

Shreve Elementary is proud to be in it's 4th year on a journey toward becoming a Leader In Me Lighthouse School. Leader in Me is an innovative, school-wide model that teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students while creating a culture of student empowerment that enables educators to promote each child’s full potential. By developing the WHOLE-child; socially, emotionally, academically and ethically, we will foster a school climate that promotes greatness! The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People® is one of the key frameworks of the Leader in Me model. The 7 Habits help students learn and apply social-emotional skills. Additionally, the 7 Habits give students and staff members a common language and are essential in building a strong leadership culture. Learn about the 7 Habits in schools or watch a free 7 Habits Webinar.
Check out the Google slide that was created by Tayshaun, a 4th-grade Shreve leader, which explains each of the 7 habits. Click on the video link below to watch other Shreve leaders explain and demonstrate the 7 Habits.
Every Student, Every Classroom, Every Day
Shreve Elementary will develop and foster influential leaders by promoting communication, collaboration, critical thinking skills, and creativity in a safe and challenging environment.
Every class has a classroom mission statement. To read all of the class mission statements, click here.
The 4 Disciplines of Execution® is another key framework of the Leader in Me process. This world-renowned methodology helps our school, staff and students identify, track, and achieve school-wide/personal/professional/academic Wildly Important Goals (WIGS).
Have you ever heard of WIGS? They aren't hair wigs, but instead, they are wildly important goals. WIGS are goals that you want to achieve in a certain amount of time. We have WIGs in reading, math, and a personal WIG. We track how we are doing with our lead measures or strategies and then chart/scoreboard our lead measures. If you had a WIG, you would write down what you want to achieve, when to start, and when to end. Then, to choose your lead measures, you would think of three ways to help you accomplish your WIG. Your goal is to do at least three of your lead measures every week. Once you accomplish your goal, it's time to celebrate! Once you're done with a WIG, it's good to challenge yourself and increase your goal. At Shreve, each student has a goal, and each student’s goal is calculated into their classroom goal, their grade level goal, and finally, a school-wide goal. Our school-wide goal is tracked every week and displayed on the TV in the lobby. We change our school-wide goal two times a year.
Community members are always welcome to attend different events to see the great things that are happening here at Shreve. We want to build a strong connection between our community members and our school. We host several events to encourage communities and other educators to check out how we are building leaders each and every day.
At Shreve Elementary, we want our leaders to not only lead within our walls but also at home. We host several events to educate parents on the 7 Habits and how they can use the language at home. These events include Family Game Night, Family Movie Night, Titan Talk assemblies, and Leadership Luncheons. Each one of these events explains the habits and how these Habits can be incorporated at home. Each of these events is student centered and student driven.
A panel of Shreve parents share testimonials of how Leader In Me has impacted their child to a community, parents, and other educators during one of our leadership events.
At Shreve, our staff is dedicated to educating the whole child and providing opportunities that are not typical during an academic day. Once a month for an hour we have our Titan Teams, which is a time for students to participate in teams such as coding, robotics, cooking, archery, invention club, Lego club and many more totaling over 20 teams. Students get to choose which team they would like to participate in. Check out this video highlighting all of our Titan Teams by clicking on the picture to the left.
Every student is given an opportunity to take on leadership roles in either their classroom or in the building. Some building-wide leadership roles include: greeters, announcement team, special events, office helpers, green team, purple tally squad, cafeteria helpers and guest guides. These roles rotate throughout the year so that students can hold multiple roles in a year.
The purple tally squad has a very important role in the school. They keep track of how many purple tallies are earned. Purple tallies are tallies that students get when they display leadership skills. They update the counter every week in the cafeteria. Once a goal is met, the entire school gets an incentive day reward.
The Green Team collects recycling paper each week for the entire building. These strong students place all the paper into bins that are then picked up by the recycling company. They also provide important facts about how much recycling helps the environment and how much Shreve Elementary has helped the environment.
Students are greeted every morning by greeters, shaking hands and saying good morning. Greeters are also responsible for choosing the music the students hear when they first enter the building in the morning.
Here at Shreve, we have a Lighthouse leadership team that represents Shreve’s leadership qualities well. They are constantly involved in many leadership activities throughout the district. To be on the Lighthouse team, the students’ previous teacher recommends them. If the student wants to join, he/she will get interviewed by the Lighthouse teaching staff. Each student gets an opportunity to get in to the Lighthouse or Habit Boosters team, depending on their strengths. The Student Lighthouse team participates in Salvation Army bell ringing, updating the slideshow on the TV in the lobby, helped teach the entire school how to create a WIG and student-led conference, and are the voice of the students to make change in our school.
Habit boosters is a group of students that encourages and promotes the habits. You are chosen to be on the habit boosters team by being selected by a group of teachers. Some things that we do on habit boosters are that we create the locker signs for the leaders of the month, we create, organize, and perform skits on a habit for our monthly school wide assemblies, Titan Talk. We also create decorations throughout the school. Habit Boosters is a great honor and a way to be involved with leadership activities around the school.
Each month, we host a building-wide assembly celebrating our Shreve Elementary leaders. During these assemblies, we highlight a specific habit by either watching a video or a skit planned and performed by students. Watch this video that was scripted, edited, and directed by Shreve leaders. We also honor students who have displayed leadership skills that month by announcing our leadership log winners and our leaders of the month. Leader of the month parents are invited to attend these assemblies and enjoy a light breakfast with their child. The entire assembly is student centered and student-led.
At Shreve Elementary, our announcements are streaming live on every classroom TV every morning. On the announcements, we have two anchors, a weather announcer, and a sports announcer. Our two anchors announce student birthdays, lead the Pledge of Allegiance, interview staff members, and share the lunch menu. The sports announcer will tell what teams are doing well, who won recent games, and the scores of recent games. Then, the weather announcer will tell the school the highs and lows for the day, if it’ll rain, snow, storm, or be sunny, along with the percentage chance of outdoor recess. On Mondays and Wednesdays, we have “Mindful Mondays” and “Wellness Wednesdays” where we do yoga for a few minutes. If you are in fifth or sixth grade, you have a chance to apply for this leadership role. Live morning announcements, in my perspective, are a great way to start off the day!
