STAMP stands for Standards-Based Measure of Proficiency and is a web-based test that assesses language proficiency. A STAMP 4S test has four sections – reading, writing, listening and speaking and the results of this test inform test takers and educators about learning progress and program effectiveness.
Triton High School is proud to announce that ten Class of 2020 students received the Seal of Biliteracy: Jamison Bell, Samuel Bell, Eric Buczala, Jorge Castaneda, Adrianna Deeb, Linda Freeman, Ivy Huang, Marcella Hubbard Brucher, Debora Jiminez, and Mayson Rodriguez. Members of this graduating class were the pioneers of this pathway in our district. This certificate provides students with an advantage and competitive edge to be more marketable, sought-after members in the global workplace.
Class of 2020 Recipients of the Seal of Biliteracy were given green cords: green symbolizing the earth and thus all languages. These cords was worn over graduation gowns and the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy insignia was affixed to student diplomas as proof of biliterate attainment.
We are excited to see what the future holds for these Class of 2020 Bilingual Graduates.
Seven underclassmen also earned the Seal of Biliteracy: Colette Crooks, Ashley and Belinda Esteban, Bennett Leahy, Christopher Montes, Danielle Oliviera, and Shanell Parra.
Christopher Montes has attained the Seal of Biliteracy with Distinction.
Combined, these sixteen students have proven their proficiency in five languages: French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, and Spanish.
What is the Seal of Biliteracy?
The Seal of Biliteracy (SoBL) is an award that recognize students who have achieved proficiency in English as well as one or more additional languages, whether it be a native language, a heritage language, or an additional language learned in school or in another setting. It is a statement of accomplishment that helps to signal evidence of a student’s readiness for career and college, and to engage as a global citizen.
The Seal of Biliteracy award recognizes students who can read, write, listen and speak in a high level of English and an additional language. It is a statement of accomplishment that helps to signal evidence of a student’s readiness for career and college and to engage as global citizens.
The Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy was established in the LOOK Act of 2017. Massachusetts joins 36 states and the District of Columbia in offering the award.
Who can receive the award? All awards can be earned by students who speak English at home and have learned a world language, or by students who speak another language at home and have learned English.
The MA State Seal of Biliteracy can be earned by graduates of Massachusetts public high schools.
The award criteria is based on the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners, from American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
For the MA State Seal of Biliteracy, a student must achieve at Intermediate High proficiency level in the two languages to earn the Seal of Biliteracy or Advanced Low to earn the Seal of Biliteracy with Distinction.
Which Languages are included in the award ? Students can receive an award for biliteracy in English and any world language (including American Sign Language). These include languages students have learned in school-based language programs, outside of school, or by living in another country.
How is Language Proficiency demonstrated? English proficiency is demonstrated through 10th Grade ELA MCAS (for the MA State Seal of Biliteracy) or through ELA MCAS or ACCESS for ELLs (for the LOC Biliteracy Pathway Awards).
Proficiency in other languages is demonstrated through nationally recognized proficiency tests or through a portfolio for language with no standardized test.
What do students receive for the award? Students earning the MA State Seal of Biliteracy receive recognition from the Triton Regional school district and the award is documented with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
