WIREGRASS YOUTH SYMPHONY ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

 

The Tri-State Community Orchestra is looking to fill the position of Assistant Director of the Wiregrass Youth Symphony Orchestra for the 2024-2025 season. This part-time position will begin on August 1, 2024 and will include 3.5 work hours per week for 30-32 weeks per year. The rate of pay will range from $15.00-$30.00 per hour dependent upon experience and the number of students enrolled in the program.

 

The Assistant Director should:

  Have a Bachelor’s Degree in Music (strongly recommended) or other related field

  Have proficient knowledge and skill in their primary string instrument and sufficient knowledge and skill of the remaining upper and lower string instruments

  Have proficient knowledge of notation, rhythm and string techniques as related to printed music

 

The Assistant Director will work with the WYSO Director as needed in the following capacities:

  Assist with weekly WYSO rehearsals from 9:00-12:30 on the scheduled Saturday mornings (approximately 15-16 weeks per semester)

  Work with students within the ensembles on an individual basis to correct performance issues as they arise

  Demonstrate proper technique, rhythms, notation and other skills as needed for students to learn by example

  Fill in for the Director as needed in case of absence

  Coordinate with the Director and WYSO Administrator for concert rehearsals twice annually (1 concert per semester) including compiling information for a printed concert program, assisting with stage transitions between ensembles, and assisting with any special guests as needed

  Assist the Director and WYSO Administrator with administrative details including student attendance, music distribution, copying materials, music collection at the semester’s end, and minor instrument maintenance

  Assist the Director as needed with summer string programs including scheduling, promoting and instructing these programs

  Assist with recruitment for and promotion of the WYSO program

 

Additional opportunities for the Assistant Director may present themselves throughout the course of the year:

  Strings Across Dothan - to instruct in the after-school program for students at the Boys & Girls Club and affiliates

  Tri-State Community Orchestra - perform with the TCO in weekly rehearsals for 4+ concerts per season

  Community Outreach opportunities - to perform with smaller ensembles for event throughout the surrounding area to educate community members and promote orchestra opportunities for both adult and student musicians and audience members
