Welcome to the Tring School Maths Department numeracy website.

We believe that the key to mathematical success at GCSE level is fluency with numeracy. A strong grasp of the four key operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and a firm understanding of calculating with fractions, decimals, and percentages are vital to learning more complex mathematical techniques.

Whilst these foundation skills are taught at primary level, our Key Stage 3 schemes of learning and assessment programme ensures that students are given the opportunity to solidify these skills and practise to ensure recall.

Welcome (1).webm

On this site you will find instructional videos to accompany all the topics found in Key Stage 2 arithmetic papers, and past papers and mark schemes. There are also videos of each question from the past arithmetic papers so students can address their understanding of specific questions.

Parents may find the videos useful, as we know that parents are sometimes anxious not to use techniques that students may not have been taught. On this, we have always said that we are happy for students to see and practise any technique that is efficient and routinely produces the correct answer!

Parents can best support their child with their Maths education by working with them outside of school on Maths, and promoting a positive, 'can do' attitude towards the subject even where their own Maths education may not have been a pleasurable one. We believe that students are not defined as being able to either 'do' Maths or, conversely, 'not do' Maths; and would encourage parents to join us in challenging this mindset.
