Classroom Management
Expectations and Procedures
- Arrival:
- Students should arrive at school on time. Our day starts promptly at 8:15.
- Classroom expectations:
Students will keep their hands and feet to themselves at all times.
Students will not run away from staff, climb furniture, or use classroom materials inappropriately (throwing, hitting, kicking).
Students will do their best when working in the classroom, ask for help appropriately when needed, and respect their peers and teachers.
Students will be expected to follow our school rules to the best of their ability. A full list of school expectations can be found in the elementary school handbook.
Students will receive individualized instruction and practice with our classroom rules and procedures at school, so do not worry if your student struggles with any of the classroom or school expectations.
Classroom setup:
- Within our classroom, seating is arranged and structured so that students can practice working in 3 different environments:
- Independent: Each student will have their own work area. Their area is structured in a way to best fit their individual needs, limit distractions, and support complete independent work. In their area, they will also find their daily schedules, break choices, communication aides, and other materials that they might need to be successful.
- 1:1 with staff: Each student will also have an area in which they go when working with an adult. At the work table, students will practice and learn new skills. Once a student demonstrates their ability to complete a specific task on their own, that task will be moved to their independent work area.
- Group: Students will be given opportunities to work in small groups and as a whole class. Group and whole class activities will typically take place on the carpet area or at a work table.
Birthday treats
Birthday treats may be brought in to celebrate student birthdays. Please provide me with 24 hours' notice if you plan to bring in treats. Treats must be pre-packaged and unopened.
- Visitors/volunteers:
I openly welcome families to come and visit our classroom from time to time. I do ask that that you give me at least 24 hours' notice. Students need time to be notified of schedule changes and when something "new or unfamiliar" is going to occur. By giving me notice, I can prepare students and adjust their individual schedules accordingly.
There may be times I ask for volunteers to assist with classroom projects, field trips, parties, or other events. If this is something you are interested in, please let me know.
