The Early Family Foundations team at The Primary School (2016 - 2026) developed a routine, universal ASQ developmental screening program that integrates relational practices with parents and their child. Being a parent of a toddler can be a lonely experience, particularly for parents in low-income communities, where it can be difficult to access high-quality services, guidance, and care. The Primary School staff experienced relational approaches as a positive moderator on parents’ openness to and follow through with the resources and systems available to support long term child & family outcomes. Studies have indicated that a lack of routine screening nationwide could mean as many as 65% of developmental delays are going undetected until kindergarten (1), when intervention becomes more expensive, less effective, and less likely that a child will be able to catch up to peers.
Use of a Family-Led process - prioritizing Relational Skills - meets parents where they are while integrating a Strengths-Based lens to activate and build on self-efficacy and resilience. When parents can access the best version of self, they are better able to support the best version of their child’s development & learning.
Integrating relational health practices into Developmental Screening can be a tool for supporting children’s developmental health and readiness to learn, plus families’ capacity to thrive in:
Early childhood programs
Pediatric health organizations
Family services organizations.
