What can we do at home?
Many simple things can be done at home to help your child improve math abilities. Below are some basic ways your child can discover relationships with numbers.
* Sorting/Classifying- when putting away dishes, laundry, groceries.
* Highs/Lows- Discuss temperatures in weather or when cooking.
* Telling Time- Reading clocks, watches and setting alarms. Discuss both digital and analog.
* More/Less (Greater than/Less than)- Shopping for food or clothing, eating meals, cooking.
* Counting- Money, shopping, using coupons, playing games.
* Compare/Contrast- While shopping for food or clothing, getting dressed in the morning.
* Measurement/Fractions- Discuss Metric vs. standard measurement, preparing and cooking.
* Symmetry/Shapes- Looking at sizes/shapes of boxes, containers, jars.
*Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division- These are all around us each day!
* Listen to your kids as they talk about numbers. Ask questions about what they are thinking and how they come up with their ideas.
