Microsoft Immersive Reader

This tool was designed to help readers succeed. It enlarges fonts, highlights words as it reads them, allows you to set the rate of speech, and utilizes other helpful features.

Immersive Reader is built into several websites and applications such as all the Microsoft applications, Office 365 online applications, FlipGrid, Wakelet, and others.

There is also a Chrome web extension - Chrome Extension - that allows users to use Immersive Reader on websites (in the Chrome browser). To use the extension

  1. open a web page

  2. select some text

  3. right-click and choose 'Help me read this'

  4. Immersive Reader will appear in a new screen.

    • The play button at the bottom starts reading

    • The speaker button next to it adjusts the speed of the reading and allows users to select a male or female voice

    • The two As in the upper right of the screen let you adjust text size, space, select a font, adjust screen colors, and increase paragraph spacing.

    • The four horizontal lines allow users to turn on syllables and color parts of speech.

    • The book sets reading preferences such as line focus, picture dictionary (from Boardmaker) and Translation. Translation will automatically translate a word or the entire selected text area into another language. Then you can have the passage read back in the new language.
