文部科学省事業「大学の世界展開力強化事業」の一環として、「スパイス、ハーブ、そして時々胡椒－食文化にみる異文化融合のプロセス－」をテーマに、11学部14名の学生が、13日をかけてオーストラリア3都市（パース、メルボルン、シドニー）を訪問しました。

s part of the Inter-University Exchange Project by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 14 students from 11 faculties visited three cities of Australia (Perth, Melbourne and Sydney) for 13 days on the theme of “Spice, Herb and sometimes Pepper: Process of the fusion of different cultures.”

本研修は、「食」という身近なツールから、多民族国家として知られるオーストラリアにおいて、移民の受入れ、文化融合の歴史や過程を学ぶことを目的に実施されました。1980年代、バラバラであった各国の食文化が、現在ではオーストラリアーナ（豪州食）として、一つの皿に多文化が反映され、オーストラリア独自の食文化を展開しています。学生たちは、各都市のフィールドに飛び込み、「食」を通して多文化融合の様子を体験してきました。同時に、各都市では大学や博物館などの文化施設を巡り、アボリジニを含むオーストラリアの多文化融合の過程を理論的に学んできました。 

The overseas training program was held with the aim of providing students who participated in the program with an opportunity to learn about the history and process of the immigration intake and cultural fusion in Australia—which is known as a multi-ethnic country—through the familiar subject of food. In the 1980s, the food cultures of various countries were individually seen in Australia. The country has currently been developing its own food culture, and different food cultures are being blended and reflected in dishes as a kind of Australiana (Australian food). The students went out to the sites of each city and experienced the fusion of different cultures through food. At the same time, they visited universities and cultural facilities, such as museums, and theoretically learned the process of the fusion of different cultures, including the Aboriginal culture in Australia.

さらに、本研修では、カーティン大学、シドニー大学を訪問し、「Today‘s Trend in Japan」をテーマにプレゼンテーションを行い、その後現地学生との交流会を行いました。またディーキン大学では東洋大学から留学中の学生たちと交流を行い、長期留学への意欲を高めました。

In the program, students visited Curtin University and the University of Sydney. There, they delivered presentations on the theme of “Today’s Trends in Japan,” followed by exchange meetings with local students. At Deakin University, a meeting with students who studied abroad from Toyo University motivated the participants to study abroad for the long term.

参加学生においては、本研修を通して、今後の長期留学参加意識の醸成を育むとともに、多文化を融合するとは何か、文化融合とはどのようなことなのかを考え、移民問題も含めた日本が抱える現実的な課題についての学びも共有することができました。

現地での体験を通じて、多文化やその融合について、それぞれの感性で学びを深め、これからの学生生活に活かしていくことを願っています。

Through the program, students thought about what the fusion of different cultures and cultural fusion is, and shared what they learned about Japan’s realistic challenges, including immigration issues, while growing their awareness of participating in a long-term study abroad program.

We hope that the experience will help students to further their understanding of multi-cultures and cultural fusion with their own sensibility, and to make use of the knowledge in their student life.
