留学に向けて

私が留学先としてコベントリー大学を志望した理由は主に２つあります。1つはイギリスにとても強い憧れをもっていたからです。当時、私はアメリカとオーストラリアへ行ったことはあったのですが、ヨーロッパへは行ったことがありませんでした。その中でも母語 が英語であるイギリスに行き、同じく英語が第一言語であるアメリカやオーストラリアとの違いを経験したいと考えました。さらに私はサッカー観戦が趣味であり、サッカーの発祥地で文化の一部のなかにサッカーが根付いているイギリスに住み、その雰囲気を体感したいと考えました。2つ目はコベントリー大学の特徴でもある国際性に惹かれました。コベントリーは留学生が約13,000人（約43%）いる大学で、様々な国から色々な背景をもった学生がいます。たくさんの人と関われる良いチャンスだと考え、志望しました。

ビザの取り方はシンプルで、現地の大学からCAS（Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies:入学許可書）が届き、英語能力証明書などの資料とともにイギリスのビザセンターに持っていきます。そこでNHS（National Health Service:保険）に加入するためのお金と合わせて支払うといった手順です。自分の場合はCASがなかなか届かなくて苦労したので、先方から来た資料や申請書は早めに提出し、常に先方の連絡を待つようにすると楽に手続きができるかなと思います。 

現地の様子

コベントリーは大学街で、町の真ん中にキャンパスがあるのが特徴です。大学から寮はもちろん、レストランやスーパー、駅やジムなどは全て徒歩圏内にあり、とても暮らしやすい街になっています。寮は大学が運営しているもの、私営で運営されているものなど、様々な選択肢があります。私はフラットという、個人の部屋があり、複数人でキッチンをシェアするという形式の寮に住んでいました。イギリスと聞くとご飯が美味しくないというイメージがあると思いますが、基本的に毎食自分の好きなものを作れるので、食べ物の当たり外れを気にしたことはあまりなかったです。イギリスは電車やバス（安くておすすめ！）の交通インフラが充実しているので、近隣の都市へ週末は小旅行もよく行っていました。

学部協定でコベントリー大学へ行く人は、schools of humanities という学部に派遣される事が決まっています。人文学部ですが、かなり幅広く自分の勉強したいことを学べ、私は国際関係の授業を取っていました。授業は１コマ９０分で、週に８－１０コマあるイメージです。課題がすべてエッセイだったため、提出のデッドライン前は大変でしたが、基本的にはあまり内容や課題がきついということはあまりなかったです。

コベントリー大学にはsocietyという制度があり、部活とサークルの間のような組織があります。私もフットサル部に所属し、海外で部活に所属するというとても貴重な経験をすることが出来ました。リーグ戦にも参戦し、多国籍の仲間と共に１シーズン戦いました。練習も週２回と、プライベートな時間も確保することができて、私にとってちょうど良い忙しさでした。新しい人脈構築もすることができたので、加入出来て本当によかったなと感じています。

プライベート面では念願の本場のサッカーを味わうことができました。地元のCoventry　Cityの試合を友人と放課後見に行ったり、電車で１時間程度のバーミンガムというイングランド第２の都市まで行き、プレミアリーグの試合を観戦したりしました。週末や長期休みの時はロンドンやリヴァプールといった大都市にも行き、世界的に有名なチームの試合観戦などもすることができました。サッカー以外だと、学生のほとんどが寮生活のため、友達の寮に行きご飯を一緒に食べたり、イギリスらしい場所で外食を楽しむといったこともありました。

アドバイス

私がアドバイスしたい事は、「やりたいと思ったことは全てやるべき」ということです。恐らくほとんどの人にとって、１度しかない留学の機会です。〇〇へ旅行してみたい！この団体に所属してみたい！と少しでも感じたらすべてやり切るべきだと考えています。私も「留学生活を何か実りのあるものにしたい」と考えフットサル部に所属しました。また趣味のサッカー観戦も多くの街を訪れ７か月で２８試合を観戦しました。私の友人でもバックパック旅でヨーロッパ横断をしたり、現地の人向けに日本食のワークショップを開いた人もいます。彼らと話していて本当に充実した留学生活を送っていたのだなと感じています。皆さんにも能動的に行動し、留学生活で１つでも多くの思い出と経験を持ち帰ってほしいと考えています。

Towards study abroad

I wanted to study at Coventry University for two main reasons: firstly, I had a very strong admiration for the UK. I had been to the USA and Australia, but never Europe. I wanted to go to the UK, where English is the mother tongue, and experience the differences from the USA and Australia, where English is also the first language. Secondly, I was attracted by the international aspect of Coventry University. Coventry is a university with about 13,000 international students (about 43%) from various countries and backgrounds. I applied because I thought it would be a good chance to get to know a lot of people. 

The visa application process is simple: you receive a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from Coventry University, which you take to the visa center of the UK, along with your English language proficiency certificate and other documents. There, you pay for the insurance together with the money to join the NHS (National Health Service:insurance). In my case, I had to wait a pretty long time receiving the CAS, so I think it would be better to submit the documents and application form from your study abroad university as soon as possible, and always wait for them to contact you.

The local situation

Coventry is a university-centered city with its campus in the middle of the town. It is a very convenient and comfortable place to live, with restaurants, supermarkets, train stations, and gyms all within walking distance from the university. There is a wide choice of dormitories, some run by the university and some privately run. I lived in a flat, which is a type of dormitory where you have an individual room and share a kitchen with several other people. You may have the impression that the food is not good in the UK, but I never really worried about the food being bland because I could cook what I wanted for every meal in the kitchen. The UK has a good transport infrastructure of trains and buses (cheap and recommended!), so I often went on weekend trips to neighboring cities.

Those who go to Coventry University are assigned to the School of Humanities. Although it is a School of Humanities, you can study quite a wide range of subjects that you want to study, and I took courses in international relations. Each class was 90 minutes long and there were 8-10 classes per week. All the assignments were essays, so it was tough before the deadline, but basically the content and assignments were not too demanding.

Coventry University has a society system, which is a kind of organization between sports clubs and circles in Japan. I belonged to the futsal club, and it was a very valuable experience for me to be part of a sports club in foreign countries. We participated in league matches and played one season with my multinational teammates. Practice was twice a week, which was just the right level of intensity for me, as it also allowed me to have private time. I am very happy to have joined the team because I was able to make new friends.

On the private side, I was able to enjoy the home of football, which I had longed for. I went to local Coventry City games with friends after school, and I went to Birmingham, the second largest city in England, about an hour away by train to watch Premier League matches. At weekends and during long holidays, I could also go to big cities like London and Liverpool to watch world-famous teams play. Apart from football, most of the students live in dormitories, so I sometimes went to my friends' dormitories to have dinner with them, or to eat out at some typical British places.

Advice

My advice is that you should do everything you want to do. You probably only have one chance to study abroad for most people. I believe that you should do everything you feel like doing, even if only a little. I joined the futsal club to make my study abroad experience fruitful. I also enjoyed watching football, visiting various cities, and watching 28 matches in seven months. Some of my friends have also backpacked across Europe or held Japanese food workshops for local people. Talking with them, I feel that they also had a fulfilling study-abroad experience. I hope that you will be proactive and bring back as many memories and experiences as possible from your study abroad experience.
