【留学前準備】

IELTS試験対策として語彙は６月辺りからスタートし、試験対策に本腰を入れ始めたのは８月下旬からです。なかなか思い通りのスコアが取れず、結局提出期限の一週間前までテストを受けました。スコアが伸びるには思っている以上に時間がかかるので、夏休みが始まってすぐに取り組めばよかったなと後悔しています。個人的には夏休み中に一度試験を受けた方が良いと思います。留学先のアプリケーションについては、他大学よりも時期がかなり早く、当然全て英語になるので非常に大変でした。短期間で必要な書類を集めるのが想像以上に大変です。特に怠惰な学生は発行に時間を要するタイプの書類に要注意です。その点で教務課やゼミの先生方に大変お世話になりました。ビザの取得は複雑な上、すべての過程を網羅しているウェブサイトが自分の調べた中ではなかったのでアメリカ留学するメンバー同士で協力して一つ一つ書類を集めました。私は書類を集め終わったことに安堵していたら、６月頃から大使館の予約が一気に取れなくなり焦りました。ビザの取得は最後の面接まで早めに行うことを強くお勧めします。

【留学生活】

私は大学内にある寮でアメリカ人と二人でルームシェアをしていました。寮の目の前に食堂があり、基本的にはそこで食事をとることが多かったです。到着してすぐにオリエンテーションウィークがあり、他国からの交換留学生や現地の新入生と共に、バレーボール大会やBBQなどアメリカの大学らしい活発なイベントに参加しました。授業が始まってからは、私の場合は午前中に集中させて授業をとったため、授業後に食堂に行き、午後は寮か図書館で課題や自習などをしていました。そして、夕方にまた食堂に行き、その後は寮に戻ってルームメイトと過ごしました。また毎週末にはカレッジタウンという住宅街でパーティーが行われていて、友達を作るために何度か行きました。週ごとに雰囲気が変わり、まさにパーティーという週や、焚き火を見ながら一緒に過ごすような穏やかな週もありました。私の留学先は比較的田舎だったので、皆さんが想像するような煌びやかなアメリカ留学とは少し異なりますが、近くに大型スーパーやダウンタウンがあり、日常生活で不満はありませんでした。強いて言うなら極寒です。寒さは限界を越えると痛みを感じることを学びました。

【授業の雰囲気】

文字通り授業に「参加」しているなと感じる雰囲気でした。どの学生も教授が話している時でさえ意見があればお構いなしに発言をしていましたし、グループでの話し合いでも各々自分の意見を持っていて良い意味で同調せず尊重してくれました。英語のネイティブしかいないグループは想像を絶する程のスピードで、発言できなすぎてトラウマになりそうでした。教授は全員親身になって話を聞いてくれて非常に助かりました。日本の大学できちんと単位を取れている方は留学先でも単位は取れると思いますが、決して楽ではないです。

【留学をとおして】

私は英語力よりも自分自身が精神的に成長したなと感じています。留学当初は精神的に苦痛でした。留学する前には、ある程度英語を勉強したという自負がありましたが、これほど自分は英語が聞こえないし、話せないのかと絶望の毎日でした。他の国に行っている友達をSNSで見るたびに、ものすごく楽しそうにしている姿を見て、自分は言葉が通じないだけでここまで落ちぶれるのかと情けなくて仕方なかったです。自分は１セメスターの留学でただでさえ時間がないし、入学当初から留学のために努力してきたのに、このままでいいのかと自分を鼓舞して「誰よりも充実した留学生活にしよう」と決意しました。そこからは授業や大学主催のイベントなどで出会った人にとにかく話しかけて、その後も毎回会う度に話しかけ、友情関係を構築しました。言語が通じない中での友達作りは中々苦労しましたが、友達が増えてからは留学生活が楽しくなりました。勿論周りの友達に沢山支えられましたが、異国の地で自分の手でどん底の状態から何とか帰る頃には楽しいと思えるように変えられた成功体験は私にとって財産です。

【留学する人へのアドバイス】

私がお伝えしたいことは２つありまして、まず語学の習得には時間が必要ということです。私は海外渡航経験０で英語は学校で学ぶだけでした。留学当初、周りの人の英語力と比べ自分を卑下することがありましたが、明らかに英語が話せている人は英会話教室に通っていた人や、留学に行ったことがあるような人たちでした。彼らは私よりも遥かに英語に触れる時間が多かったのです。そこで他人と比べていても仕方がありません。恐らく多くの人が「自分ってこんなに英語を話せないのか」と落胆すると思いますが、当たり前です。話せている人は留学前に沢山の努力をしています。でも安心してください。留学先で頑張れば良いのです。２つ目は、英語は学問ではなく言語ということです。皆さんはこれまで文法や読解などの正しい英語を求められ学習していたと思いますが、たとえ文法的に間違えてしまっても自分の頭の中で考えていることを相手に伝え、相手の考えていることを理解しさえすればよいのです。そのやり取りの質や速さを高めるために、正しい英語を勉強するのだと私は考えています。ぜひ留学に行き、たくさん悩んで努力してみてください。どんな結果になろうと、留学に行くという大きな決断をしただけで素晴らしいことだと思います。応援しています。ここまでご覧いただきありがとうございました。

【Prepare for study abroad】

For IELTS, I started studying just vocabulary from June, and I focused my attention for the exam from the end of August. I took exams 1 week before the deadline as I didn’t get the score I was hoping for. It takes longer to get a good score than I expected. I recommend you take an exam once at least during the summer break. About application, it was so tough because, compared with other universities, the deadline was earlier and every sentence was in English, of course though. Collecting all the documents in a short time was a hard work for me. Especially, I want to warn lazy students about documents which need much time. In this point, the Education Affairs Section and my seminar’s teacher helped me a lot. I could not find a helpful website of getting VISA. Moreover, getting a VISA is too complicated. I cooperated with my friends who were going to study abroad to U.S. As I was relieved to finish collecting all the documents around June, all at once, there was no open spot for an interview at US embassy. I got impatient at that time. I strongly recommend to you to make all the processes done as soon as possible.

【Campus life in the U.S.】

I had an American roommate in a dormitory of Minnesota State University Mankato. I basically ate meals in the dining center in front of the dormitory. As soon as I got to the University, they held an orientation week. I participated in some American-style events such as volleyball tournament and BBQ with other new students and exchange students. When class starts, in my case, I mainly took morning classes. After that, I went to the dining center and I worked on assignments and studied for myself such as vocabulary and listening in the afternoon. After that, I got back to the dorm and talked with my roommate. I wanted to make more friends, so I joined a party in a place called College Town which is located close to university. They have a party every weekend. Each week there were parties with many varieties or themes. I participated in a literally party and bon fire party that was so chill. Though my destination is different from your imagination of the life of U.S. because it is located in countryside, I don’t have any dissatisfaction. If I had to say anything, Minnesota is super cold. I learned cold is going to be painful to some extent.

【Class】

In class, I bet you can feel like joining the class. Every student argued with their opinion, even if the professor was talking. In group discussion, they all had their own opinion and respected others. They did not synchronize others in a good way. Once, I had a chance to join a group which is composed of native speakers other than myself. Their speaking speed was quite faster than I expected. I tried to listen to their opinion, but I couldn’t understand them at all. It was one of my traumatic experiences. All professors were so kind and sometimes I consulted with them. If you get credits properly in Japan, I assure you can get them even in U.S. However, it is completely not easy to do that.

【My experience while studying abroad】

I feel I improved my mentality rather than English skills. In the beginning, it was very challenging while I was in study abroad program. I had a confidence to learn English to some extent before going to U.S but I was desperate how terrible my English skills were. Every time I saw my friends on SNS who seemed to be having fun, I compared them with myself. I was not able to turn my life like that, just because I could not speak English. In my case, I did not have much time, because I only had 1 semester. Also, from the beginning of entering Toyo University, I have been putting effort in English for study abroad. I ask myself “Is the current life good?” I agitated myself and decided to make my life the best in my life. Then, I started to talk to people I met at university events and people who took the same class. I gradually built a friendship. Though it was tough to do so with my poor English, my friends gave me a lot of fun. Of course, my friends supported me but the experience that I changed my life into unforgettable one in other country where Japanese is not 1st language is my property.

【Advice for students studying abroad】

I have two things I want to tell you. The first one is that it takes a while to learn English. I had not been to other countries before I studied abroad. In the beginning of the time, I sometime compared my English skill with others, but someone who can speak English obviously well have experience about English conversation school or about study abroad before. They had far more time of learning English than me. I suppose many people get disappointed at their English skills, but it is what it is. Good speakers put a lot of effort before going there. However please rest assured. I promise you can grow up in the place you choose. The second one is that in my opinion English is not academic subject. It is just a tool you use to share your thoughts or imagination. I bet you learned correct English until now, but even if you make a mistake, you just tell others what you think and understand what they think about. I think correct English helps to improve the quality and speed of conversation better. Try to make a lot of effort facing difficult problems you cannot easily solve by going to other countries. No matter what result comes, I will praise you for making a big decision to study abroad. Thank you for reading my story about experiencing study abroad program.
