私はオーストラリアの西オーストラリア州にあるパースという街に1学期間留学していました。留学先大学はカーティン大学といい、もとは工科大学で生徒数は5万人を超えています。3割ほどは留学生のため、溶け込みやすくキャンパス上では多様な人種が見られます。

この留学先を選んだ理由として、高校の研修旅行で行けるはずだったオーストラリアにコロナウイルスの影響で行けなくなってしまい、悔いが残ったままだったのが1番の理由です。また、両親の仕事の関係でヨーロッパに住んでいた頃、色々な国に旅行に行った経験から、すべての大陸にいきたいという夢ができました。オーストラリアは行ったことがなく自分の希望が叶うと思いました。このような日本以外の国に住んだ経験を踏まえ、英語圏、特に多文化主義の国に興味があったのと、英語力を上げたかったため英語圏であるオーストラリアを選びました。さらに、海外に住むとなると一番気になるのが治安ですが、オーストラリア自体比較的安全で、パースは自然と都会が融合しているという点が過ごしやすそうだと思い留学先にしました。

留学先大学決定のためにIELTSの受験と志望理由書を準備しました。IELTSは目標スコアが6.5で各技能6.0以上を目指し、11月中旬の出願に向け8月末から4回受験しました。最初はライティングが目標とは程遠かったのですが、何度も受験を重ねることで慣れていきました。その後留学先が決定してからは様々な手続きがあり、留学へのモチベーションがかなり低くなるくらい大変でした。主に準備したことは、パスポート取得、留学先大学へのアプリケーション提出、授業選択、寮選び、ビザ、費用準備、飛行機のチケット、保険加入です。カーティン大学は3月中旬にアプリケーションが届き、4月末に提出でした。突然すべて英語の書類がメールに届くため、後回しにしてしまうと提出期限ギリギリになってしまうので、届いたらすぐに目を通し準備を開始することを勧めます。ビザは内務省のサイトからアカウントを作り、パスポート、Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)という志望理由書、Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)というオーストラリアの保険、Confirmation of Enrollmentという大学から求められる書類を提出します。留学先大学に提出するアプリケーションはパスポート、成績証明書、英文証明、授業選択シート、個人情報の入力を行いました。6月には寮を選ぶ時期がありその期間に申請しましたが、その前から申請できたようです。わからないことはメールで聞いていました。お金はキャッシュパスポートという9通貨使えるデビットカードを準備しました。オーストラリアでは現金はほとんど使わずカードで全て支払っていました。

次に授業に関してですが、難しくて何を言っているのかわからないことが多かったです。最初は、オーストラリアのアクセントが強い先生に慣れるのが大変でした。1時間のレクチャーと2時間のチュートリアルまたはワークショップがあり、レクチャーは大体オンデマンドでした。チュートリアルとワークショップは少人数制でレクチャーの内容をもとにディスカッションがあったり、課題のプレゼンテーションを行ったりしました。成績は課題で決まるので、課題を必ず提出するようにしていました。大きい課題が12週間中3つあるので日本の大学よりもかなり大変でした。グループワークの場合はまだ負担が少ないですが、レポートはかなり大変で友達に助けをもらったりしていました。

キャンパス内の寮に住んでいたため、授業の10分前に部屋を出れば時間前に教室につきました。1人部屋で寮費は高かったですが、学生寮は競争率が激しいようでその寮しか空いておらず選択肢はありませんでした。正直に話すと、朝昼晩毎日食事付きの寮でしたが味は不評で、バスルームも共有なのが不便でした。ですがこの寮から友達の輪が広がっていったので、ここに住んで良かったと思っています。イベントも豊富で、一番新しい寮なので綺麗で設備も豊富でした。

パースは自然豊かですが都会的な部分もあり、人もおおらかでとても住みやすい場所でした。25カ国ほど旅行などでいろいろな土地を見てきましたが、パースは将来住みたいと初めて思いました。卒業後は日本の海外展開している企業に就職し、いつか海外駐在できればと考えていました。しかしこの留学を通して、日本で就職活動をして、どこかの企業に退職まで勤めることだけが将来の選択肢ではないことに気づきました。現在は卒業後にパースで就職したいと考えており、東洋大学とカーティン大学の修士課程ダブルディグリー制度も考慮に入れています。

留学で一番学んだことは、ありきたりかもしれませんが視野が広がったことです。具体的にいうと、就職について考えたり、いろいろな人種の知識が増えたりするなど、考えが柔軟になったことです。一つの世界しか知らないと、これしか道がないと考えがちになってしまいますが、いろいろな人に出会い話を聞くと、他にも多くの可能性があると知り、自分の選択肢が多く増えます。私はその中で目標ができ、モチベーションも上がりました。

正直あまり行きたくない気持ちも抱えながらオーストラリアに出発しましたが、心の底から行って良かったと思っています。留学でしか得られない経験を通して、英語も人としても成長を感じています。 

My study abroad destination was Perth, in Western Australia. The host university was Curtin University, originally an institute of technology with over 50,000 students now. About 30% were international students, creating a diverse atmosphere on campus.

The main reason for choosing this study abroad opportunity was the regret of not being able to visit Australia due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which was originally planned for a high school study trip. Additionally, during the time I lived in Europe due to my parents' work, I had the opportunity to travel to various countries, and from those experiences, I developed a dream of visiting every continent. In order to fulfill that dream, Australia was a perfect study abroad destination since I had never been there before. Based on my previous experiences living in countries other than Japan, I was interested in English-speaking countries, especially those with a multicultural environment, to improve my English skills. Furthermore, safety is a significant concern when living abroad, and Australia is known for being relatively safe. The combination of nature and urban elements in Perth made it seem like a comfortable place to live, so I chose it as my study abroad destination.

To apply for the host university, I prepared for the IELTS exam and a statement of purpose. My target IELTS score was 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each skill, and I took the exam four times from late August to meet the mid-November application deadline. Although my writing skills were initially far from the target, repeated attempts helped me improve.

After the university acceptance, various procedures were required, leading to a considerable decrease in motivation. I obtained a passport, submitted the university application, selected courses, chose accommodation, applied for a visa, managed finances, purchased a plane ticket, and arranged insurance. Curtin University's application arrived in mid-March, with a submission deadline at the end of April. As English documents suddenly arrived by email, it is advisable to review them promptly and start preparations to meet the submission deadline.

For the visa application, you need to create an account on the Department of Home Affairs website and submit your passport, a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement, Australian Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), and a Confirmation of Enrollment from the university. The application to the host university included a passport, academic transcripts, an English proficiency certificate, a course selection sheet, and personal information. Accommodation selection occurred in June, and although I applied during that period, it seemed that applications could be submitted earlier. I addressed any uncertainties through email communication.

For financial matters, I obtained a Cash Passport, a debit card usable in nine currencies. In Australia, I rarely used cash and paid for everything with a card.

Regarding classes, many classes were challenging to understand, and adapting to the strong Australian accents of some professors was difficult at first. There were one-hour lectures and two-hour tutorials or workshops, with lectures mostly available on-demand. Tutorials and workshops were organized with small numbers of people and involved discussions based on lecture content or presentations for assignments. Grades were determined by assignments, so ensuring timely submission was crucial. There were three assessments over 12 weeks, making it more demanding than Japanese universities. While group work was less burdensome, reports were challenging, and I often sought help from friends.

Living in on-campus accommodation allowed me to reach classrooms on time by leaving my room 10 minutes before class. Although a single room in the dormitory was expensive, it was the only available option due to intense competition. Honestly, the taste of the provided meals and the inconvenience of shared bathrooms received negative feedback. However, living here expanded my circle of friends, and I am grateful for the experience. The dormitory was the newest building as an on-campus accommodation, so they had abundant facilities and hosted various events.

With its abundant nature and urban features, Perth was a very livable place with open-minded people. I have traveled to 25 countries, but Perth is the first and only place where I thought I would like to live in the future. Initially, I planned to work for a Japanese company expanding overseas after graduation and hoped for an overseas assignment.

However, through this study abroad experience, I realized that job hunting in Japan and working for one company until retirement is not the only future option. Currently, I am considering working in Perth after graduation and contemplating the double degree program between Toyo University and Curtin University.

The most significant lesson from studying abroad is the clichéd but true realization that my perspective has broadened. Specifically, my understanding of job opportunities, knowledge of various races, and the flexibility of my thinking have expanded. When you only know one world, it's easy to think there's only one path, but meeting different people and hearing their stories reveals numerous possibilities, increasing your choices. In this process, I found goals and my motivation for that increased.

I departed for Australia with mixed feelings, not particularly wanting to go, but now I genuinely feel it was the right decision to go. Through experiences that can only be gained through studying abroad, I have felt growth, both as an English speaker and as an individual.
