【留学に向けた準備】

私は高校生の時に短い期間ではありましたがアメリカに行く機会があり、そこで初めて海外を経験しました。大学に入学し、今の学科に入り、高校生の頃よりさらに英語に触れる機会が増え、英語の重要さを身に染みて感じたと共に、もう１言語学びたいという思いも強くなり、高校生の頃から興味があったスペインを留学先に選びました。スペインに留学するといっても授業は英語で受講だったため、２言語を同時に学ぶことができる環境にも魅力を感じました。

留学に向けた準備として、ビザ申請が大変だと感じました。スペインは他の国に比べてビザが発行されるまでの時間が長く、私が申請したときは申請後、約７週間、発行までにかかりました。また、申請のために必要な書類も年によって変わるので、定期的に調べることが大事でした。

居住先は留学先の大学が斡旋してくれていて、たくさんある家の中から自分で家を選んで応募するというものでした。スペインでは、他の学生と共同生活をするシェアフラットが一般的だったので、友達を作るためや日々英語に触れるためにもシェアフラットを選択しました。また、留学前の２年の春学期にスペイン語の授業を取り、基礎文法などは学んだ上でスペインに留学しました。

【留学中、学生生活】

留学先のデウスト大学は、ビルバオとサンセバスチャンという街にそれぞれ1つずつキャンパスを構えていて、私は国際関係学を専攻していたため、ビルバオで留学生活を過ごしました。スペインでは、スペイン語に加え、それぞれの州で独自の言語を確立していて、私が暮らしたビルバオではバスク語という言語も話されていました。そのため、スーパーに行く時や街の人と挨拶をするときはバスク語で挨拶をすることが多かったです。私は、スペイン語を少しだけ勉強して行きましたが、いざ現地のスペイン語を耳にするとほとんど理解することが出来ないうえ、バスク語も分からなかったため、最初は理解できない自分にとても落ち込みました。しかし、時間が経つに連れて、理解できることも増え、もっと現地の人とスペイン語で話したいと思うようになり、それがスペイン語を勉強するモチベーションとなりました。

留学先では国際関係学を専攻し、国際法や比較政治学、地政学などの授業を受けました。中でも私が興味深いと思ったのは、地理的条件から政治を読み解く地政学の授業で、地理と政治を結びつけて、世界の政治や状況を分析できる意外性に感銘を受けました。

授業内での様子として、日本の大学と比べて、グループワークがとても多かったです。話し合って自分の意見を共有する時間が頻繁にあり、授業を聞くだけではない、能動的な授業が多かったように感じます。

初めは授業についていくこともできず、意見を述べる段階にいくこともできませんでしたが、分からないことを分からないまま終わらせず、周りの学生に聞くことで、友達になることもできたり、悩みを解消したりできたため、コミュニケーションの重要性を強く感じました。

【留学中に感じた “その先の新しい風景”】

スペインに留学してみて、人生の選択肢の多さを実感しました。私のルームメイトには高校卒業後、1年間のギャップイヤーを通じて異国の地に行き、ボランティア活動を経験してから大学に入学した人や、このスペインでの留学を終えてからワーキングホリデーでもう１度違う国に行く人もいました。私のイメージでは、日本ではこのような将来のキャリアプランはあまり一般的ではないと思いますが、沢山の友達と出会い、選択肢の多さを実感することができました。

また、留学を通して、言語を学ぶことの楽しさや異文化に日々触れられることの貴重さに気付き、このような当たり前ではない日常を過ごせたことによって、帰国後、以前は気にもしなかった事や新しい発見に出会えることができ、この留学は新たな自分を見つけることができた有意義なものとなりました。 

【Preparation for study abroad】

When I was a high school student, I had the opportunity to go to the United States for a short period of time, which was my first experience abroad. After entering university and joining my current department, I encountered English even more than when I was in high school, and as I felt the importance of English more deeply, I also felt a strong desire to learn another language, and so I chose Spain, a country I had been interested in since high school, as a destination for study abroad. Even though I would be studying in Spain, I took classes in English, so the environment in which I could learn two languages at the same time also made me feel attracted to the country.

In preparation for studying abroad, I found it difficult to apply for a visa. Compared to other countries, Spain takes longer to issue visas, and when I applied, it took about seven weeks to be issued after I applied. The documents required for the application also changed from year to year, so it was important to check regularly.

The accommodation was arranged by the university where I was studying, and I had to choose a flat from many options and apply for it myself. In Spain, it was common to live in a shared flat with other students, so I chose a shared flat to make friends and to be exposed to English daily. I also took Spanish classes in the spring semester of my second year before coming to Spain to learn basic grammar.

【Studying abroad, student life】

The University of Deusto, where I studied abroad, has one campus each in the cities of Bilbao and San Sebastian, and I spent my time in Bilbao as an international relations major. In Spain, in addition to Spanish, each province has its own language, and in Bilbao, where I lived, the Basque language was also spoken. Therefore, when I went to the supermarket or when greeting people in the city, I often greeted them in Basque. I studied a little Spanish before I went there, but when I heard the local Spanish, I could hardly understand it, and at first, I was very depressed because I did not understand the Spanish and I did not understand the Basque language. However, as time went on, I began to understand more and more, and I wanted to speak more Spanish with the locals, which motivated me to study Spanish.

When I studied abroad, I majored in international relations and took classes in international law, comparative politics, and geopolitics. What I found particularly interesting was the geopolitics class, in which we read politics in terms of geographical conditions, and I was impressed by the unexpectedness of being able to link geography and politics to analyse world politics and situations.

As for in-class activities, there was a lot more group work compared to Japanese universities. There was frequent time to talk and share our opinions, and I feel that the classes were more active and not just about listening to the lessons.

At first, I couldn't follow the classes and couldn't get to the stage where I could express my opinions, but I didn't end up not understanding what I didn't understand and by asking the students around me I was able to make friends and solve my problems, so I strongly felt the importance of communication.

【The "new landscape beyond" that I felt while studying abroad】

Studying in Spain made me realise how many choices there are in life. One of my roommates went to a different country through a one-year gap year after graduating from high school and experienced volunteer work before entering university, and some of my friends are going on working holidays to a different country once more after this study in Spain is over. In my impression, this kind of future career plan is not so common in Japan, but I met a lot of friends and realised how many options there are.

Through studying abroad, I also realised how enjoyable language learning is and how valuable it is to be exposed to different cultures on a daily basis, and by being able to live such an unusual daily life, I was able to encounter things and make new discoveries back home that I had not paid attention to before. This study abroad experience was a meaningful one that helped me find a new identity.
