2022年1月から、スペイン・バスク地方にあるサンセバスチャンに半年間交換留学をし、同年7月に帰国いたしました。

今回は私の留学体験をお伝えする機会を頂きましたので、同学科の学生のみならず、これから同学科を志望する高校生の方々やそのご家族に少しでも参考になればと思います。

私の留学の目的は、視野を広げ、多様な価値観に触れることでした。当初は、「留学ならやっぱりアメリカかな。」と漠然と考えていましたが、それまでに2度のアメリカ短期研修の経験があったことから、「せっかくなら、まだ行ったことのない場所で留学に挑戦してみよう」と思ったのが最初のきっかけでした。その後、実際にスペインに留学した先輩のお話を伺ってから、スペイン留学に興味を持ち、学部の協定校だったデウスト大学を志望しました。

私が留学したバスク地方のサンセバスチャンという街は、約60km²と決して大きくはありませんが、美食の街とも呼ばれており、バルやレストランがたくさんあります。また、ビーチも有名で、とても素敵な街でした。

しかし、思っていた以上に英語が伝わらない、コンビニがない、いきなりのスウェーデン人との2人暮らしなど、あまりの環境の変化に最初は不安でいっぱいでしたが、徐々に慣れていくことで、充実した留学生活を送ることができました。

留学時の英語レベルは決して高くはなかったため、最初は授業についていくのにも苦労しましたが、先生に直接聞いたり、友達に助けてもらったりすることで理解を深めていくことができました。大学では、ビジネス学を専攻し、主に国際マーケティング論、企業の海外進出、EU研究などの授業を履修しました。授業はすべて英語で行われましたが、その他にスペイン語の語学の授業も履修しました。

授業の内容はとても興味深く、特に印象的だったのは、ロシアがウクライナ侵攻を開始した数日後のEUの授業でした。教授が急遽その日の授業内容を変更し、侵攻に対してEU、また世界はどのように対応すべきか、というテーマについて議論しました。私と同じように留学していた学生達は出身も考えも多様で、とても刺激になりました。もちろん起こっている事は悲劇なのですが、偶然にもこのタイミングで留学できたことは貴重な財産となり、教科書だけでは学ぶことができない”生きた学び”をたくさん体験することができたと思っています。

また、コロナ禍の留学ということも今回私にとってとても大きな意味があったと感じています。私は2019年度入学のため、本来であれば2020年秋から1年間の留学に行くはずでしたが、 コロナの影響で留学の延期勧告が大学から告げられました。その後も事態の回復を望みましたが、結局2020年度の留学は中止になってしまいました。想定もしていなかった事態に何もすることができず、ただ途方に暮れていました。留学を諦めた同期もたくさんいて、本当に留学に行くべきかとても悩みました。しかし、両親や教授にも相談をして、最終的には、1年間休学をして半年間留学をする、という選択を取りました。

半年間という短い期間でしたが、このような情勢の中でも留学にチャレンジすることができて、本当によかったと感じています。多様な価値観にたくさん触れたことで、自分自身とても刺激を受け、成長することができました。この貴重な経験を今後の人生でも活かしていきたいです。

これからもたくさんの学生が留学に挑戦すると思いますが、微力ながら、今後は私も何らかの形で皆さんの手助けができればと思っております。挑戦には失敗がつきもので、留学は大変なこともたくさんありますが、それらを1つずつ乗り越えていく経験こそが留学の価値だと思います。この体験記がこれから留学に挑戦する皆さんの手助けになれば幸いです。がんばってください、応援しています。

スウェーデン出身の友達の誕生日会での1枚 / Birthday Party for my Swedish friend

I have been on a six-month exchange program in San Sebastian, Basque Country, Spain, since January 2022, and returned to Japan in July. I was given the opportunity to share my study abroad experience, and I hope that it will be some tips not only to the students of GINOS but also to high school students and their families who are interested in studying in GINOS.

The purpose of my study abroad was to broaden my perspectives and experience diverse values. At first, I simply thought, " I would probably go to the U.S." However, I had already had two short-term study abroad programs in the U.S., so I decided to try studying abroad in a place I had never been before. Later, after talking with seniors who had actually studied in Spain, I became interested in Spain and decided to apply to Deusto University, which was the department's partner.

The city of San Sebastián in the Basque Country, where I studied abroad, is not very big (about 60 km²), but it is also known as a foodie destination, with many bars and restaurants. It is also famous for its beaches and was a great city.

However, I was filled with anxiety at first because of so many changes in the environment, such as not being able to communicate in English as well as I had expected, the lack of convenience stores, and suddenly living with a Swedish, but I gradually got used to it and was able to have a fulfilling study abroad experience.

I was able to deepen my understanding by asking the teachers directly and getting help from my friends. At the university, I majored in business and took classes mainly in international marketing theory, corporate overseas expansion, and EU studies. All classes were taught in English, but I also took Spanish language classes.

The content of the classes was very interesting, and I was particularly impressed with the EU class a few days after Russian invasion of Ukraine. The professor suddenly changed the content of the day's class and we discussed how the EU and the world should respond to the invasion. Different ideas and diverse perspectives given by the international students were very stimulating and it was very meaningful opportunity. Of course, what happened was a tragedy, but the fact that I was able to study abroad at this time was a valuable asset, and I believe that able to experience a lot of "practical learning" that I could not have learned from textbooks.

I also feel that studying abroad during the Corona era was very significant for me. I was supposed to study abroad for a year starting in the fall of 2020, but the university declared its postponement due to the pandemic. I hoped that the situation would improve, but in the end the study abroad program for the 2020 was cancelled. I was at a loss, unable to do anything because of the unexpected situation. There were many of my classmates who had also given up on studying abroad, and I wondered if I should really try. After consulting with my parents and professors, I finally decided to take a year off to study abroad for six months.

Although it was only for a short period, I am very glad that I was able to try studying abroad even under such circumstances. I could get various points of view, which was very stimulating and helped me grow. I hope to make the most of this valuable experience in my future life.

I am sure that many students will try to study abroad in the future, and I hope to be able to help them in some way. I believe that the value of studying abroad is in the experience of overcoming challenges one by one. I hope that this report will be help to those of you who will go out into the world.
