Dr Alina Korobeinyk, a researcher of Nazarbayev University, visited the Bio-Nano Electronics Research Centre, Toyo University for a month for a collaborative research project.

Please introduce yourself and your university.

My name is Alina Korobeinyk, Dr. I came from Nazarbayev University, the autonomous research university in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan which was founded by the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev in 2010, as an English-medium institution, with an international faculty and staff.

What is your recent research topic?

My recent research topic is a formation of the chemically pure noble metal nanoparticles over the silica support in order to use them in waste water demercurization.   

What is your motivation to do research?

A good teaching team in my secondary school. All of subjects they taught I am following till now – chemistry, biology and technology.

Please tell us about your life in Kazakhstan.

Life in Kazakhstan can be tough especially because of the climate. Apart of the weather the country is great! Kazakhstan is a huge country – ninth largest country in the world however it’s extremely underpopulated (less than 6 people per square kilometre). The Kazakhstan climate changes from desert to continental and landscape is extremely versatile too. You can discover a lot of distant pristine places for hiking, backpacking or skiing. And at the same time two main cities – Almaty and Astana are vigorous with life and development. The major concern is an isolation of this country and a part of it – you can drive for hour or two without passing a village or a small city.  

What's it like to do research at the BNERC?

Obtaining an interesting scientific results in just a few weeks was extremely exciting, but however not the major point. It was mainly about gaining a new experience of working in the unique scientific establishment as the BNERC is.  

What is your dream and goal regarding research?

One of my great wishes is to create other the waste assimilation plant technology based on the green chemistry other the self-degradable packing material to reduce the waste-related pressure on the environment.
