Mr Appan Roychoudhury, a doctoral student of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, visited the Bio-Nano Electronics Research Centre to carry out his Ph.D work with BNERC researchers.

Please introduce yourself and your university.

Hello! I am Appan Roychoudhury, pursuing doctoral degree from Centre for Biomedical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India, under the supervision of Dr. Sandeep Kumar Jha and Prof. Suddhasatwa Basu. Currently I am in second year of my Ph.D. program and working as an institute scholar.

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (commonly knowns as IIT Delhi) is one of the premier public institute in India, located in country capital New Delhi. The institute was established in 1961 as College of Engineering and Technology and declared Institute of National Importance under the “Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act 1963” and later renamed as “Indian Institute of Technology Delhi”. IIT Delhi is mainly a technological institute which conducts bachelor’s, master’s and integrated master’s degree courses in several engineering disciplines. Additionally, it also offers Ph.D. program for research in basics sciences, applied sciences as well as in interdisciplinary areas. Owing to its excellent infrastructure, premier educational platform, highly sophisticated facilities and for meaningful research, IIT Delhi is now globally reputed for scientific outputs. Currently, IIT Delhi has been listed in QS top 200 universities globally.

What is your recent research topic?

Presently, I am working on fabrication of the capillary electrophoresis microchip and to explore it’s bio-sensing applications.

What inspired you to become a scientist?

Basically I am a biotechnologist as I have done B.Tech in Biotechnology and after that I have shifted to Biomedical Engineering during my M.Tech. In my M.Tech dissertation, I got an opportunity to work on nanoparticle based sensing and biosensor development and in that project I have developed a total cholesterol biosensor successfully. This experience helps me to grow interest in scientific research and ultimately led me to doctoral studies.

What's it like to do research at the BNERC?

Firstly I would like to thank Prof. Kumar and Prof. Maekawa for their guidance, wonderful support and cooperation. The facilities in BNERC, especially in microfabrication technology was outstanding and the time spent over there was inspirational, learnable and enjoyable in true sense. I got some valuable experience which would be immensely helpful in my further research. Finally I want to thank all the research scholars and office staffs for their help and support.

What are you dreams and goals regarding future research?

I want to execute meaningful research work in the field of inter-disciplinary sciences related to Microfabrication technology, Nanotechnology as well as Bioelectronics and Biotechnology in order to explore the scientific ways and contribute to scientific world through my knowledge, skills and dedication.
