Q&A

Who can pick up?

Our site has only been approved for parent or legal guardian to pick up for children 18 and under.

What is this program?

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally-funded, state-administered program. SFSP reimburses program operators who serve free healthy meals and snacks to children and teens in low-income areas. Because of Covid regualtions the SFSP program has been approved to serve weekly meals in a box. Each box provides breakfast and supper for 3 children based and the nutritional guidlines of the USDA. This program is based on "The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010".

Why are the lines so long?

Waiting in line is frustrating and we get that. We are constantly working hard to update our systems to make the wait as short as possible. You can help by making sure you have your sign pre-filled and visible. Please remove all other signage and stay off your phone to help keep the line moving.

Why is this only for children? Why can’t I get food/meals for my entire family?

As an extension of the National School Lunch Program, which is designed to guarantee eligible children free and nutritious breakfasts and lunches during the school year, the SFSP was created to guarantee these same children at least one nutritionally sound meal a day during their summer vacations. The SFSP is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

If I don’t keep kosher, can I still pick up a box for my children?

Of course. We are so thankful to have kosher meal boxes that help the many families in our area that require kosher. This is a federally funded program, and does not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, sex, religious creed, disability, age, or political beliefs . We are proud to serve all of the local area families in need, whether they require kosher or not.

Are you able to make accommodations for families with special needs?

We will do our very best to accommodate children with disabilities. Please contact us at meals@torahinstitute.org to find out what we can do to help.

How can I stay up to date?

We keep this website, and Baltimore Jewish Life constantly updated!
