Definitions

Consonant Blend

• two or more consononants that come together in a word.  Their sounds blend together but each sound is heard: black, swim, lamp

Consonant Digraph

• two consononants that together stand for one sound: when, bath, sheep

Vowel Digraph

• two letters that together stand for one vowel sound:  leaf, yawn, auto

r-Controlled Vowel 

• a vowel that is followed by the letter "r", and the two letters are pronounced together as one sound:  yarn, bird, perfect

Endings (inflectional)

• a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning:  reading, tallest, dogs, boxes
