ABOUT

Tom specializes in relationship management, business development, and content strategy for the scientific, technical, and medical (STM) publishing industry. He runs a consultancy that works with tech startups and STM publishers. In 2019 Tom relocated to Chicago after three years in London overseeing global publisher accounts for a multinational data analytics firm.

EXPERIENCE

Frontiers, an STM publisher committed to Open Science

Head of Public Affairs and Advocacy, North America, September 2022 to present

  • Plan and execute advocacy initiatives to support Frontiers’ mission: to make science open so that researchers can collaborate better and innovate faster.

  • Provide strategic advice to key stakeholders on Open Science specifically and science policy and scholarly publishing overall.

Smarter Learning, a consultancy for tech startups and STM publishers

Publishing Strategist, June 2011 to present

  • Services include consulting, data analytics, and print and digital content development.

  • Two current clients are scite, which checks scholarly articles for supporting or contrasting citations, and Integrity by iThinking, which uses graph databases to discover patterns and relationships within scholarly data.

Strategic Account Manager, March 2020 to June 2022

  • Fostered relationships with CCC’s most prominent rightsholders, as classified by revenue, volume of content under management, and/or industry reputation.

  • Responsibilities included helping these organizations discover competitive and financial efficiencies for their content and generating leads for new partnership opportunities.

  • Accounts under management included media groups (The New York Times Company); academic societies (American Medical Association, Royal Society of Chemistry); and a number of leading STM publishers, including Open Access publishers.

Clarivate Analytics, a multinational information and technology company (formerly the IP & Science business of Thomson Reuters)

Manager, Publisher Relations; March 2015 to June 2019

  • Created a role to oversee the company's UK-specific Publisher Relations activities and to strengthen its relationships with European, Asia Pacific, and Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) publishing partners. Based in London from 2016 to 2019.

  • Managed strategic accounts, fostering relationships with key publishers providing a high volume of content for Web of Science, a multidisciplinary collection of influential scholarly research (journals, books, and conference proceedings).

  • Coordinated with sales, marketing, editorial, and technology teams to improve and maintain products and services (eg, the Master Journal List) on which publishers relied.

  • Traveled extensively to collaborate with key partners and to speak at conferences.

F.A. Davis Company, a medical publisher in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Primarily as Senior Acquisitions (Commissioning) Editor; July 2004 to March 2015

  • Led multiple project teams in a matrix-management environment, coordinating the efforts of authors, editors, marketers, and print- and digital-publishing specialists.

  • Managed Davis’s Drug Guide, the company’s best-selling nursing product, in both print and electronic formats (total annual sales: $3.5 million USD).

IC Axon (formerly MedCases), a med-tech startup in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Primarily as Senior Production Editor; February 2001 to July 2004

  • Created multimedia educational content with a team of physicians, medical writers, and software engineers, and edited a variety of company publications.

  • Wrote headlines and edited local, national, international, business, and sports copy.

RELATED WORK

  • Education Committee (2021-present), the International Association for Artists and Rights Holders (IAFAR). Provide education and advocacy about neighbouring rights and a community for those working in this segment of the music industry. IAFAR's education team creates workshops and literature to help answer questions and solve problems affecting neighbouring rights, the rights related to the public performance of master recordings.

  • Co-Chair (2018-2020), Community Engagement Committee, for the non-profit Society for Scholarly Publishing. Provided strategic and operational direction for SSP's US and international committees organizing educational and networking events.

  • Mentor (2018-present), SSP Mentorship Program. Matched for six-month sessions with early-career professionals working in the STM industry.

  • Co-Founder (2014-16), Philadelphia chapter of the Editorial Freelancers Association, a national non-profit organization headquartered in New York City. Organized networking and social events, panel discussions, and guest speakers.

  • Various freelance writing and editing assignments, including nonfiction manuscripts for Quirk Books and feature articles for The Pottstown Mercury, a Pennsylvania newspaper.
