Week of March 17-20
Reading: We will begin our poetry unit. Students will explore how poems often rhyme and can be about any topic. We will learn about the structure of poems including lines and stanzas.
Writing: We will start our poetry unit this week. We will also be developing our vocabulary skills by learning and using more interesting words to replace common words. (Example: Instead of happy, try a word like joyful, merry, blissful or delighted.)
Math: We will begin our unit over Geometry, Time and Fractions. This week we will practice telling time to the five minute interval. Students will need to know if a time is a.m. or p,m. We will also discuss polygons focusing on triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and octagons.
Science: We will begin our unit on plant functions and structures. Students will learn the parts of a plant and what purpose each part serves for the plant.
Social Studies: We will discuss timelines and learn how to create one to prepare for our timeline project next week. Please send five pictures for your child’s timeline project by Monday, March 23rd. Pictures should be 4x6 or smaller.
Week of March 2 - 6
Reminder: Closed campus on Tuesday and Thursday this week due to TELPAS testing. (No volunteers or lunch visitors)
Reading: Students will learn about text structures this week. This is the way that information is organized and includes descriptive, sequential and cause/effect text structures. We will also compare texts from different genres.
Writing: This week, students will publish their independent informational writing and also spend time practicing creative writing.
Math: We will conclude our Unit on Problem Solving. Our test will be given on Wednesday. It would be beneficial to practice 3 digit addition and subtraction at home.
Science: We have concluded our units for this period and will be going over concepts learned to prepare the students for Science Day on Friday.
Social Studies: We will continue learning about cultures and traditions in our community.
Week of February 23-27
Reminder: Closed campus on Tuesday and Thursday this week due to TELPAS testing. (No volunteers or lunch visitors)
Reading:This week, we will focus on biographies. Students will learn about historical figures by reading biographies, and we will learn about attributes and features of biographies.
Writing: Our writers will continue working on their informational pieces while learning about suffixes and how to apply them in their writing.
Math: We will continue solving word problems. We will also focus on writing a word problem for a given number sentence. Students need to practice their addition and subtraction at home in order to be successful with these skills.
Science: We will continue our unit over environmental characteristics. We will take our assessment on Friday, February 27th.
Social Studies: We will begin learning about cultures and traditions in our community and beyond.
Week of February 17-20
Updates & Reminders
Reading: We will review what we have learned about nonfiction texts with a mini research project. Students will learn about a European country as we prepare for TCES International Night. Students will take a nonfiction assessment at the end of the week.
Writing: Students will independently apply what they have learned about informational writing by drafting their own informational piece. We will also continue learning about prefixes and how they change the meaning of words.
Math We will continue with adding and subtracting within 1,000. This week we will focus on reading and solving word problems. Please take time to practice this at home. You can just write out a 3-digit plus or minus a 3-digit number sentence for your child to work. Ex: 459-187 or 367 + 494.
Science: We will continue our unit over environmental characteristics. We will focus on how we change our environment and that there are positive and negative consequences to changing the environment.
Social Studies: We will continue to learn about technology and review for our assessment next Monday, February 23, 2026. It will cover landforms, continents, the pros and cons of our environmental modifications, resources in various geographic locations, and the ways our lives have changed through the use of technology.

Reading: We will continue learning about nonfiction texts this week. We will learn to use text evidence to answer questions about nonfiction articles. Additionally, students will learn to use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Writing: We will continue our nonfiction writing unit by learning how to write conclusions and publishing our books. In addition, we will take a Grammar Assessment and begin learning about prefixes.
Math: We will continue learning addition and subtraction with 3 digit numbers. Students are expected to determine if a word problem is solved with addition or subtraction.
Science: We will take our assessment over human made and natural resources on Tuesday. Then we will start our next unit over environmental characteristics. We will focus on how we change our environment and that there are positive and negative consequences to changing the environment.
Social Studies: We will learn more about how science and technology have changed the way we live compared to the past. Our test on 2/23/26 will cover continents, landforms, modifying the environment, and how our form of communication has changed over time.
Week of February 2-6
Please Note: February 3 will be a closed campus day due to an RLA Field Test in 5th grade. TCES will not have lunch visitors or volunteers on this day. Additionally, 2nd grade lunch is at 12:20 on this day only.
Reading: We will continue learning about nonfiction texts this week. Students will learn about determining the topic, central/main idea, and supporting details of a text.
Writing: This week, students will learn how to write paragraphs with a clear main idea and several supporting details about a topic of their choice. We will also focus on learning about pronouns.
Math: We will begin our unit on adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers. Students will need to read and solve word problems that involve adding and subtracting numbers within 1,000.
Science: We will continue sorting objects into human made and natural resources. The students will also talk about how to conserve and reuse resources.
Social Studies: We will learn about the pros and cons of modifying the environment, ways to conserve and replenish natural resources, and how technology has changed over time to help people meet their basic needs.
Week of January 26-30
Reminder: Wednesday, January 28th is a closed campus day. (No lunch visitors)
Reading: We will finish identifying text features in nonfiction books and how they help us as readers. The students will take an assessment on Friday over text features.
Writing: We will begin writing informational text. Students will go through the brainstorming process this week. We will also learn about conjunctions. Students will be expected to use conjunctions in their writing.
Math: We will finish our place value to 1,200 unit this week with comparing and ordering numbers. The students will take an assessment on Friday.
Science: We will take an assessment on changes to land this week. Then we will begin our unit by identifying natural and manmade items.
Social Studies: We will continue learning about landforms and various ways humans modify the physical environment.
Week of January 19-23
Reading: We will continue to learn about nonfiction texts with an emphasis on text features this week. Students will learn to identify features and explain their purpose. Text features include table of contents, index, glossary, photographs, captions, diagrams, maps and headings.
Writing: This week, students will continue writing their How-To writing books. They will learn to edit their work by making corrections. We will also continue learning about contractions.
Math: We will continue working with composing and decomposing numbers to 1,200. The students will then work with placing numbers on a number line. They will need to recognize if the number line is skip counting by 2’s, 5’s or 10’s and what the missing numbers are. They will also need to be able to place a number on an open number line.
Science: We will continue to learn about how wind and water can change the land over time. The students will now have discussions over this topic to show what they know about the process.
Social Studies: We will review major landforms and learn about ways people modify the physical environment.
Week of January 12-16
Reading: This week, we will begin our Nonfiction Reading Unit by comparing fiction and nonfiction texts. Students should be able to determine if a book is fiction or nonfiction and explain how they know.
Writing: We will continue our Procedural (How-To) writing unit. Students will write about topics they are experts on by giving facts and details. We will also focus on contractions.
Math: We will continue to work on place value to 1,200. We will use place value to identify numbers that are 10 more, 100 more, 10 less and 100 less than a given number. (Ex: 100 more than 458 is 558). The tens and ones place will stay the same, only the hundreds place is changing. We will also compose and decompose numbers in various ways. Science: We will continue to learn about how wind and water can change the land over time. We will complete hands-on experiments to help the students understand this process.
Social Studies: We will learn about major landforms and bodies of water, including the seven continents and ocean. Students should be able to identify landforms and be able to explain ways humans have modified the environment (building bridges, drilling for oil, etc.)

Reading: Students will learn to identify if a statement is a fact or opinion and explain how they know. We will also learn to determine the topic of a text.
Writing: We will start our Procedural (How To) writing. Students will write about topics they are experts on by giving facts and details. We will also learn about compound words.
Math: We will revisit place value with numbers to 1,200. The students will need to represent numbers in standard form, expanded form, base ten blocks and word form.
Science: We will investigate and describe how wind can move soil and rock. The students will participate in an experiment to show how wind blows sand to create sand dunes.
Social Studies: Students will learn to identify and locate the continents and oceans on a world map.
Week of December 15-19
Reminders:

Reading: We will review fictional story elements as well as the author's purpose. Students will compare stories to find similarities and differences among the story elements.
Writing: This week, students will write brief friendly letters to friends and family.
Math: We will review 2 digit addition and subtraction as well as preview some upcoming math concepts, such as geometry and working with numbers greater than 500.
Science: We will review weather concepts and vocabulary.
Social Studies: We will read about holiday traditions around the world.
Week of December 8-12
⭐Reminder: The second grade program is on Thursday, December 11th. Students need to be at school by 5:45 pm for the evening performance.
Reading: We will review fiction story elements by comparing several versions of Gingerbread Man stories. Students will make connections between the characters, events and themes in the stories.
Writing: This week, students will learn about proper nouns that name locations (City, State, Country) as well as days, months and holidays. We will take a grammar assessment over all recently taught concepts. Students will also continue writing friendly letters.
Math: We will continue counting a collection of coins up to $1.00. Students will also need to know what coins to add to a collection to have a certain amount. We will then begin talking about financial literacy. Students need to know the following vocabulary words: spend, save, deposit, withdrawal, borrow, lend, responsible and irresponsible. This part of the unit integrates with our Social Studies unit.
Science: We will complete our unit on Weather Conditions and take the unit assessment on Friday.
Social Studies: The kids will continue to learn about economics. We will focus on the role of producers and consumers. We will also learn about deposits and withdrawals. We will be taking a test on Thursday over the past two units.
Week of December 1-5
Reading: This week, we will dive into persuasive texts. As we read, we’ll also discuss the importance of identifying whether a statement is a fact or an opinion.
Writing: We will continue to learn about verb tenses. We will go over irregular verbs such as go/went and say/said. We will also talk about future verb tenses. Then we will look at using adjectives to compare and adding -er or -est to the end of an adjective.
Math: We will begin our money and financial literacy unit. The students need to be able to count a collection of coins up to $1.00. They have to write the amount with the dollar and cent sign.
Science: We will begin our unit on Weather Conditions. We will focus on vocabulary such as precipitation and temperature, as well as conditions such as tornadoes, hurricanes and floods.
Social Studies: We will begin our goods and services unit. This unit goes along with our money unit in math. The students will focus on wants and needs and goods and services this week.
Week of November 17-21
Reading: We are continuing our study of Dramatic Literature. Students will work in groups to practice and perform short Readers Theater plays for the class. We will wrap up the week with a Drama Assessment on Friday.
Writing: We are learning more about parts of speech this week. Students will learn about plural nouns including irregular plurals such as mouse/mice and child/children. We’ll also learn about present and past tense verbs.
Math: We will review and practice solving story problems with 2 digit numbers before we take an assessment.
Science: We will continue our unit on objects in the sky. We will be able to describe the Sun as a star that provides light and heat and explain that the Moon reflects the Sun's light. We will take the assessment on Thursday.
Social Studies: We will continue our study of map skills, including creating our own maps with all the necessary features (title, compass rose, key and symbols) .
On Friday, we will be making Cranberry Sauce in class. This is a surprise to the students. The ingredients include fresh cranberries, sugar, orange juice and cinnamon. Please let me know if your child may not have any of these ingredients.
Week of November 10th
Reading: We will continue learning about Dramatic Literature this week. Students will work in groups to practice and perform short readers theater plays for our class.
Writing: We will complete our personal narrative unit this week. Students will revise and edit their stories.
Math: We will continue to work on solving problems within 100. The students will need to know when to add and subtract. We will focus on solving two step problems. Math Strategy Videos
