Math Intervention

FAQ

Many parents have questions about what occurs in math intervention.  Below is a list of commonly asked questions.  If your question is not answered below, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Q:  What is math support?

Math support is small-group instruction that occurs in the "Learning Lab" in grades K-5, and during math intervention in grades 6-8.  Math intervention focuses on skills that have been taught in the previous grade level(s). Focusing on remediating these skills supports student learning in the classroom and fills any "gaps" in student knowledge and understanding.

Q: How is my student chosen to participate in math intervention?

The selection is based on data and observations obtained through district assessments and classroom assessments.

Q: When does my student attend math intervention

At Birch Grove Primary School, students attend math intervention for 30 minutes per day, during their learning lab block. This block is a set time in the day where content area re-teaching occurs and students receive extra support either inside or outside of the classroom.

At TMS, math intervention is built into the Unified Arts (UA) schedule. Instead of participating in a UA, students who receive math intervention will be seen during this scheduled block of time.

We do not currently offer math intervention at THS; we look forward to building this structure and tiered support in the future.

Q: Is my student in math intervention for the entire year?

Not necessarily.  Math intervention runs in intervals of time based on student need. As students master the concepts in math intervention, they are re-evaluated and exited.  Some students will only attend math support for a few sessions, while other students may attend math support for every session.

Q:  What does my student do in math intervention?

In math intervention, your student is working on mastering the concepts they were previously taught and/or expected to know as a prerequisite to the current grade level math content. In grades K-5 we use Bridges in Mathematics Intervention, which is aligned to our core math resource, Bridges in Mathematics. In grades 6-8, we use a combination of Maneuvering the Middle, Bridges in Mathematics, and additional resources to plan for specific student needs.
