生物は長い地球の歴史の中で自然環境に適応して進化してきました。虫・プランクトン・魚・両生類・鳥などの多様な生物は各々森から川・池・湿地そして海に至る流域の様々な場の特性を巧みに利用して、時にダイナミックに移動しながら生きています。各々の生物にとってどういう生息場が必要で、その生息場は自然の中でどのように維持形成されているのだろうか？野外観察・調査・そして時には大規模な野外操作実験を通して自然本来の流域生態系の成り立ちを調べています。

Organisms have evolved to live in the natural environment over long history of our planet. Diverse organisms including insects, planktons, fishes, amphibians, and birds occupy diverse habitats in watersheds from forests, streams, ponds, wetlands to the ocean. What kinds of habitats do they need, and how are such habitat maintained in the watershed? By field-based research, including observations, surveys, and experiments, we investigate how natural watershed ecosystems work.
