Center for the Advancement of Open Online Education, Tohoku University was established in April 2016 to contribute to the further advancement of the university's education and research. It does this by conducting integrated research, development, planning, and support for massive open online courses (MOOCs) in collaboration with relevant departments, while disseminating and publishing the university's educational and research achievements domestically and internationally through online education.
In April 2025, the Center was integrated into the University's Admissions Organization with the goal of attracting outstanding talent from Japan and abroad through the utilization of MOOCs, making the Center's role increasingly vital.
The University has already promoted the “Expansion of the Educational System through e-Learning” and achieved results through the ISTU (Internet School of Tohoku University) initiative for its students. However, aiming to realize a university “open to the world and the region” and one that “actively promotes educational and research activities that embrace, support, and nurture the intellectual interests of citizens,” we have been distributing our university's course content globally as MOOCs since 2016.
By widely disseminating our world-leading research and educational achievements, along with unique research and educational outcomes rooted in Japan and the Tohoku region, as course content to MOOCs—which bring together diverse learners regardless of location, race, language, educational background, or age—we hope to contribute to solving societal challenges and realizing a peaceful and just human society.
We look forward to meeting learners worldwide through MOOCs. Please stay tuned.
