The major challenges facing modern society, such as the realization of technologies that are carbon neutral and conserve the environment, the digital society, and the improvement of people’s well-being, are becoming even more complex and intertwined. These challenges cannot be solved by the efforts of just one academic discipline or organization; what is needed is high-level collaboration that goes beyond the conventional boundaries of academic disciplines and organizations and brings together knowledge from across Japan. The ‘Executive Committee for Coalition Strategy of NanoTerasu (ECCS)’ was founded to meet the demands of our times.
The executive committee is composed of the national, public, and private universities and national research institutes that are members of the NanoTerasu Coalition, operated by the Photon Science Innovation Center, and industry leaders are welcomed to act as advisors. It was established as a new hub for strategic planning within Japanese academia, transforming individual strengths into organizational power. By forming strong inter-organization partnerships that go beyond collaborations between individual researchers, and through the use of NanoTerasu, a cutting-edge research facility, we will work to solve social issues facing modern society and together realize a better society.
The ECCS aims to achieve the following three visions through the strategic use of the unparalleled ‘light’ provided by NanoTerasu and contribute to the sustainable development of science, technology, and industry in Japan.
We will create a new community where Japan’s leading universities and research institutions can go beyond the conventional framework of individual collaborations between researchers to instead engage in discussions as organizations to develop and implement strategies to solve major issues.
Japan’s outstanding academic research institutions will play a central role in helping us to accurately identify the needs of industry. We will build a new framework for wide-area problem-solving collaborations between industry, academia, and government, with NanoTerasu at the center of those collaborations, and link them to implementation within society.
We will promote the creation of an ‘Industry-Academia-Government Co-Creation Ecosystem’ that will continually generate new innovations, driven by the revolutionary achievements originating from NanoTerasu. This will strengthen Japan’s international competitiveness, and we will share the outcomes with the world.
