This week, Mrs. Hamlet’s class is reading an informational text about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Students will practice writing strong questions based on the information they read.
Around 100,000 people were left without homes.
Over 17,000 buildings were destroyed, covering about 3.3 square miles of the city.
The fire caused approximately $200 million in damage.
There were only about 185 firefighters available to fight the fire.

Ms. Hamlet’s class began reading Holes on January 14, 2026. This image shows the cover of the book. There is also a movie version of Holes, which can be watched on Disney Plus.
When Mrs. Hamlet’s class was unfamiliar with the word ironic, Mrs. Hamlet showed the class the music video for Isn’t It Ironic by Alanis Morissette on YouTube to help explain the meaning of the word.
