National Conference
National Conference
Jointly organized by
Association of Agrometeorologists, Anand, Gujarat
&
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
February 15-17, 2023
Inter and intra-seasonal fluctuations in the climate have a significant impact on the agricultural production system. Climate change is now a reality, as evident from the significant increase in CO2 concentration and global mean temperature. Increasing levels of GHGs alter the energy balance between the atmosphere and the Earth’s surface, in turn increasing the temperature and modifying the chemical composition of the atmosphere. Extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, cold waves, heat waves, and other phenomena, have increased and impacted agricultural production systems, which will likely continue in the future. In addition, agriculture and allied sectors such as animal husbandry and fisheries are also influenced by climatic factors through biotic and abiotic stresses. As a result, India's food security is under threat due to climate change and climate variability.
Climate Resilient Agriculture (CRA) could be achieved by better management of farm resources, minimizing losses and sustaining the output with agrometeorological interventions. In view of knowledge sharing on the advancement in agrometeorological research, new concepts, hi-tech instruments, ICT, IoT, AI and ML technologies in climate studies, the AGMET 2022 has chosen the following themes.
ACRC (previously known as the Department of Agricultural Meteorology) was established on November 9th, 1998 with the specific aim of doing research on weather in relation to agriculture and allied sectors viz., crop production meteorology (crop-weather studies), micrometeorology, aerobic meteorology, hydrometeorology, soil climatology, forest meteorology, horticultural meteorology, animal meteorology, seed meteorology and other related subjects. The other aim is to strengthen agro-meteorological education in the State of Tamil Nadu.
The Agromet advisory service based on the location-specific weather forecast for Tamil Nadu is being made in collaboration with the India Meteorological Department, other national or international agencies, and will be communicated through different mass media to farmers and other stakeholders in Tamil Nadu. The Department was renamed as the Agro Climate Research Centre (ACRC) in June 2007 with multidisciplinary faculty, in order to provide manpower to the Agromet division of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), TNAU, ICAR, SAU’s, national service organizations, and the corporate sector for the benefit of research and extension activities.
