Hello Kindergarten
This year in art class, we will draw, color, glue, cut with scissors, and learn this new world of virtual art. This years theme is "Art tells a Story". Be on the lookout for uploaded videos of the story that will connect with the art projects.
We have sent home an ART Workbook (packet of copied, stapled pages) please make sure your kinder has this by their side for each class, along with supplies!
Art Supply List: Please have art supplies within reach of your kinder at the start of each class. We will be using these supplies through this year: pencil, eraser (rectangular like a pink pearl style), plain white paper, crayons and markers (Crayola, Sargent and Prang are best, Crazy Art are low quality), color pencils (and sharpener), and a Black Sharpie.
Thank you and Happy Creating! Mrs. Hanlin and Mrs. Carney

Adults -- scroll down for notes on what happened in the different classes. If your kinder missed a class, they can catch up this way!
Wed. August 26:
Today we completed two pages in the art workbook. We completed the Color My Words (leaf colors) and the Color Wheel page.
Then I suggested that they can color the front of their book while they were waiting for others to catch up.
I read a book about colors and color mixing called Color, by Ruth Heller.
HOMEWORK: Draw a picture of your FAVORITE stuffed animal or toy! Draw it in pencil then color it in to show us all next week! Also, practice writing your First and Last name 10 times a day!
Suggestions for ART SKILL GROWTH: Do "jumping jack finger exercises" daily; draw in the dirt outside daily (sandy dirt, dry hard dirt with a sand like base); you can also draw in sand; one way is to put a thin layer of sand or of salt in a shoe box lid and draw in that with the back of a pencil!!! Then shake it to start over. It is a primitive hack version of an Etch a Sketch!
Wednesday, Sept 2nd:
Today we reviewed which 2 pages in the art workbook students were to have completed, the Color My Words (leaf colors) and the Color Wheel page.
We then did a series of warm up activities drawing vertical lines as 11 with a space between them I I and then we connected them with horizontal lines to make squares. We also practiced our circle making skills and noted that half a circle is like the letter C or part of the number 3. After repeating those shapes of squares, circles and triangles, we colored while I read a book
I read a book about a unique elephant named "Elmer" by David McKee. We colored the elephant page in the back of the workbook.
I encouraged students to continue drawing until I see them next week.
Wednesday Sept. 9th & 16th -
On these days kinders in Ms. Carney's class worked on the pages in the ART Workbook titled "Shapes" and "Lines." We practiced repeating the shapes INSIDE the shapes, drawing 4 circles inside the giant circle, and 5 squares inside the giant square (and so on). We clapped out the syllables in the words and practiced how they sounded. Then the next page called Shapes provided a blank space for us to draw something MADE FROM SHAPES, so we let our creativity go wild and drew and ocean with fish made of circles, ovals, triangles and added birds and boats on top! Then we colored it in. The next two pages are all about LINES, so we practiced how to make the many kinds of lines, and talked about variety of line. We reviewed how lines are what is used to Build Shapes, and we looked at the kind of lines in letters.
Wednesday Sept. 23 -
Today we practiced cutting. We learned how to hold scissors (with the thumb on top and the 3 fingers in the larger bottom hole). Then we practiced cutting all kinds of crazy lines! Cutting is a big challenge for little ones. It can be messy, but is an excellent and ENGAGING skill (as is using a hole punch). If you missed today, have your student cut out the dotted zig zag lines on the LINES page in their workbook.
Next, we worked on the page titled PATTERNS and we followed each pattern to complete the missing shape in the blank box. Then we went in and color coded them to Make A Pattern in Color!
Homework: It would be wonderful if you had some extra scrap magazines -- then invite your kinder to practice cutting out shapes they find in the photos! Cutting out the shapes is great practice and builds muscles in their little hands! Remind them that all cut out pieces need to go into the trash -- and that cleaning up is part of having art... you can't have art without planning to clean up and put away supplies afterwards!
