Welcome and thank you for your interest in participating!!! Please watch this introductory video to learn more about our Ecoblitz and what to expect as a citizen scientist!
The registration process will take about 15-30 minutes to complete, and can be completed in multiple steps (does not need to be completed in one sitting).
All species observed during the Ecoblitz will be collected on your phone using the iNaturalist app (no cost). These steps will prepare you for using iNaturalist:
Register at https://www.inaturalist.org/home
Download the mobile app to your phone and log into your account
Watch the iNaturalist video tutorials: https://inaturalist.org/pages/video+tutorials
Read about how to make good observations and step-by-step instructions using the app on your phone: https://inaturalist.org/pages/getting+started
You will need to join our project page. From your phone app, select the "more" link at the bottom right (three dot icon), then select "Projects," and then enter our project name into the search icon (magnifying glass icon): Ecoblitz: Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. You can also find our project in the "Nearby" screen.
At the bottom of the screen for each of your observations will be a "Projects" folder. You will need to tag each observation to our Ecoblitz project folder in order for your observation to be linked to the Ecoblitz.
We encourage you to practice making observations using iNaturalist beforehand, so you become more familiar with the platform
You can view the project boundary in the real-time map in iNaturalist, to ensure you are within the project boundary. To view the project boundary map, visit the "Explore" link within the app, and in the search bar type "Rancho San Rafael Regional Park Ecoblitz" and during typing, a drop-down menu will appear. Select the "Find projects named..." link and the Ecoblitz project boundary map will appear.
No idea what species you have observed? Not a problem! Expert biologists on iNaturalist use your photos to identify any species you don't know. That is why much of the training videos focus on how to take quality photographs.
Because you will be using the iNaturalist app to collect data, don't forget to charge and bring your phone to the Ecoblitz!
All citizen scientists will need to complete these two steps, which will to help us coordinate your participation during the Ecoblitz:
Complete the Ecoblitz Registration form (click here)
You will need your iNaturalist user ID to register
Read the TMCC Voluntary Activity Waiver (click here)
We will provide printed copies of this waiver for you to sign when you check in
CONGRATULATIONS!
You are now ready for the Ecoblitz!
Don't forget to review the Day of Logistics page for parking information, how to Ecoblitz, and what to bring. We look forward to meeting you when you arrive; you will have the chance to win schwag (see homepage for a list of our sponsors who have helped made this event possible including schwag donations)!
