The Meaning Behind the Name “KAHAWAI ”
This chapel was named by Luana Maitland, who leads cultural programs at the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort.
Affectionately known as the “Ambassador of Aloha,” Luana is deeply respectful of Hawaii’s history and culture.
So, what meaning did she see in the name “Kahawai”…?

Waikīkī, which means “spouting water” in Hawaiian, is one of the world’s most iconic beach resort areas, known for its hotels and shopping destinations.
Along the shores of Waikīkī Beach stands the Hawaiian-born hotel,
Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort—a place that embodies the history and culture of Hawaii.
At the closest point to the beach within this resort,
you’ll find the Kahawai Chapel.
Right before your eyes lies the healing sea
"Kawehewehe"
Among all of Waikīkī Beach, this sacred spot has long been cherished by Hawaiians as a place filled with powerful healing energy.
Seen from above, you'll notice a soft blue stretch of ocean,
uncovered by coral reefs, that looks like a stream or pathway flowing into the sea.
This mysterious place, where rainwater from the mountains emerges from the ocean floor,
is a rare meeting point of fresh and salt water.
Because coral cannot grow here, the water remains so clear
that you can see the sandy seabed below.
The Kahawai Chapel stands above this sacred flow.
The approximately 8-meter-long virgin road leading to the altar
was designed to evoke the image of a stream or flowing water,
which is the inspiration behind the name Kahawai Chapel.
It symbolizes the journey of rainwater falling on the mountains,
flowing beneath the hotel, and emerging into the healing sea of Kawehewehe.
Walking this path represents stepping into a new chapter—
a heartfelt wish for a joyful voyage through life.
Hawaii’s history began long ago, when Polynesians voyaged thousands of kilometers across the ocean in canoes to reach these islands.
To prevent their vessels from capsizing, they used long, narrow floats attached to the sides of the canoes—these are called outriggers.
In honor of those courageous journeys, the hotel takes its name from this word.
The chandelier, inspired by the shape of an outrigger, was designed as a symbol of support and balance—
a heartfelt wish for a joyful and steady voyage through your life together.
