Time Immemorial
An Indigenous Speakers Series
An Indigenous Speakers Series
Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Catholic DSB (PVNCCDSB) and Trillium Lakelands DSB (TLDDSB) are thrilled to invite you to the launch of Time Immemorial; An Indigenous Speaker Series on Thursday April 21, 2022 at 7pm featuring Niigan Sinclair. During this virtual series Indigenous Elders, Scholars, Authors, and Knowledge Keepers will broaden and deepen our understanding of what it means to have been on this land since time immemorial.
Time immemorial is a phrase used in many Land & Territorial Acknowledgements.
“I would like to acknowledge that we are gathered on the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig Nishnabeg who have lived with this land since time immemorial. Many treaties exist in this area among them; the gunshot, the Dish with One Spoon, Treaty 20, and the Williams Treaty. I have much to learn about these treaties and my responsibilities tied to them. I am grateful for the opportunity to better understand the history of this land and its Original People as I embrace and commit to the journey that is truth and reconciliation.”
Deeply connecting and understanding what time immemorial really means is challenging within the limitations of today’s society, ongoing colonial pressures and the structure of the English language itself. Our hope is that through this learning series listeners will come to a place of critical reflection and examine what it is they are expressing when they share a land/territorial acknowledgement.
Through this speaker series we are inviting Indigenous Elders, Scholars, Authors, and Knowledge Keepers to broaden and deepen our understanding of what it means to be Indigenous to these lands and waters in the context of time immemorial.
When introducing the TRC Report, Chief Commissioner Murray Sinclair said: “We have described for you a mountain. We have shown you the path to the top. We call upon you to do the climbing.”
As the listeners, we invite you to locate yourself along this path to Truth and Reconciliation. We hope that in using a personalized acknowledgement you will better understand where you are at and the next step you need to take in order to move forward on this journey.
