Reading Comprehension

Please try to read for 30 minutes each day. You can read independently, read to an adult, have an adult read to you, or listen to an audiobook or ebook. Use these prompts to disucss your reading with your family:

  • What would happen if…?

  • I wonder what was meant by…?

  • Does an event in this book remind me of something that’s happened in my own life?

  • Does an event in this book remind me of something that I’ve seen in another text (book, movie, etc.)?

  • Does an event in this book remind me of something happening in the world today?

  • Can I understand the character’s feelings? When have I felt the same? Was the situation the same or different?

  • If I was writing a summary, what important information would I include?

  • Find a word I didn’t know before and look them up in a dictionary. Does the definition help me understand the sentences better?

  • Is this book making me feel any emotions (happy, sad, frightened, excited)? Which ones and why?

  • Can I make a prediction about what I think is going to happen next in the book? What proof do I have of this?

  • Can I tell what the characters are thinking because of what they do? Is there any evidence that says whether my ideas are correct?
