During the Learning Periods 2-3 my PLTW class has been working on Oshape. Each student has worked to create individual chess pieces and form a complete chess set. So far I have finished the my chess set on Onshape and will am working to download them as images on OneRender. After that the class will 3D-print their chess set.
My first chess piece on Onshape was the pawn. I first looked up images and brainstormed different designs for this piece. Next, I drew out an engineering drawing. When I first began drawing it on Onshape it took a while to get used to the navigation and tools of the modern CAD. That was probably the hardest part of the pawn.

For the bishop I also looked at different images before drawing the piece to make my engineering drawing. I drew the front, right-side, top, and isometric of the bishop. When drawing it on Onshape I used the same skills that I learned from the pawn. The hardest part of the bishop was probably making the Symmetric Extrusion for the bishop's frown.
For the rook I went straight to the engineering drawing and then to Onshape. On Onshape I used spline for the base then the line tool for most of the middle and top. Next I revolved my first sketch so I had a rook without the the very top details. To get the top details I extruded to make one of the details then used the circular pattern tool to copy that around the top of the rook.
This was the hardest chess piece to do on Onshape. I began by drawing the Queen out for my engineering drawing and then drawing the dimensions out. When I got on Onshape I did the base and middle like all the other chess pieces. Once that was done I had to draw the top the do the crown cut. I did this by doing a symmetric extrusion and then using the circular pattern tool to copy the extrusion around the crown.
The king is perhaps my favorite chess piece to have done on Onshape. First I drew out the base, middle , and top (not including the cross). After that I revolved that part. Next I made a new sketch for the cross and then extruded it. By using the mirror tool I then took the half cross and mirrored it so it was a full cross.
The Knight was my final piece. The knight was very different from the other pieces because the Knight is not symmetrical so I can't revolve the whole thing. First I did the engineering drawing. Next I drew and revolved the base. From there I went back to Sketch one and extruded the horse part of the piece. After that I went again back into Sketch one and drew the mane and extruded it.
