Students will wear something  to signify their character but they do not need to buy a costume. They can be creative using an old Halloween costume, using a bed sheet and rope for a robe, or create something of their own!

Make sure you have SIGNED UP to see your child receive a Character Trait award (one sign up per child, please).

We are nearing the end of the States projects as they are due NEXT WEEK (5/7). Please check in with your child to come up with a plan. They are given daily reminders in class with an opportunity to ask questions, research, and work on their Introduction Card and Bibliography. These beautiful projects will be on display during our "Road Trip Around the States" on May 14. This will be in the chapel room and is open for family visitors from 1:30-2:45pm. *If you are bringing a young child with you, please be with them at all times*

Our Bible "Wax" Museum is just around the corner, as it will be on May 9. This will also be held in the chapel room from 1:30-2:30pm. Students were assigned a character, last week, that they will study and dress up as for the museum. This is an "in-class" project.

Last week we began our new Math unit and we have our topic test THIS WEDNESDAY (5/1). These last 4 units are extremely short with only a few lesson each. This means that we will have a topic test about once a week.  Click HERE for an at-home resource.

4/8/2024

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break! I cannot believe we are this far along. I am so proud of all the hard work that has been put forth this school year! We have hit the ground running in 4th quarter and have many fun things such as murder and mystery, a utopian city far below the earth's service, a war for independence, some chemical reactions, and so much more!

Please check this blog weekly and read emails being sent home. A permission slip for our next field trip was sent home before spring break. Please make sure it is signed by this Wednesday (3/10). If we do not get a response in time, the office will assume your child is attending and your account will be charged. Don't forget, the Spring Concert is this Friday (3/12) from 2-3pm. This will take place in the auditorium and students are asked to wear spring colors such as light pink, bright blue, yellow, etc.

This week we are wrapping up Unit 12 in math (Please click here for an at-home resource), and beginning our short films as our in-class project for Westing Game!

Oh ya!...and,  it's the moment our class has been waiting for: our Fifty Nifty United STATES AND CAPITALS!!! On Fridays, students will no longer have their regular spelling test but instead be tested on the spelling AND geography of the region of focus. This is in preparation for their final test of all 50 states (5/16). There are online games linked under "Additional Resources".

We are starting this week learning the first section of the USA - WEST Region. There are five regions and each week they will be assigned one at a time. They will be working on their States Flip-book each week pertaining to the region we are studying. To help get started in learning the states and capitals, their locations, and how they are spelled, here are some games and videos you might want to look at.

I hope everyone had a wonderful 3-day weekend! This week we are tying up any loose ends to finish strong in the second quarter! The quarter ends this Friday, January 19th.

Last week, students completed their in-class book club project and typed Informational Essays. This was a major focus of the entire week, so students were given ample time, not only to complete these assignments, but review and peer review. This week, students will be taking their STAR tests for the quarter. These results will be on their report cards for this second quarter. We are also taking our Topic 7 Math test at the end of the week. We will once again be taking this test in two parts. Part 1 will be on Thursday and Part 2 will be on Friday. The focus of this unit was adding and subtracting fractions. Please click HERE for an at-home resource. *Please note that all students have several resources (practice, games, etc) that they can access in their Savvas accounts.

Science Fair Project check-in this Wednesday. Ideally, at this point students have completed their experiments and have completed their typed written report in MLA (or just about finishing up). Last week we spent over an hour in class reviewing and setting up an MLA formatted paper. This week, we will be going over our Science Fair reports to be sure they are set up in proper MLA format. *Please remind your student that their report should be on a Google Doc under their school email)* The written report should be written in their Science notebooks and then students should be taking that information directly from their notebook to complete their typed report. For MLA help, see tab "Additional Resources" on our class page. Click HERE for a link to the Science Fair Packet for more details. The final project is due January 30th with the following 4 items: 1) composition notebook, 2) typed report with plastic cover (clear front), 3) 3-panel display board, and 4) be prepared to give oral report. **All students can also find all resources on their Google Classroom (Science)

Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and was able to spend time with their families. We are continuing to plug away at our curriculum and the hard work is paying off!

Science Fair Project packets will be sent home this Wednesday and  your student is to return this Friday with their Approval Form. Do not have your child start their project until after their idea has been approved. We will spend class time on Monday, going over all the parts that need to be included in a science experiement (i.e. independent variable, dependent variable, 3 trials, etc). The detailed packet will be read in class AND should be reviewed again with your student at home. It contains A LOT of information! *Please check towards the back of the packet that has the timeline of important due dates throughout this assignment*

We will begin our new Book Club this week and I am so excited! We begin a new unit in Math, working on strategies to divide decimals. We will be studying about Samson in Bible this week and as always, please be sure to check the Study Guide on Thursdays (Google Classroom) to help your student prepare for the Bible test. Throughout the next few weeks, we will be working on our Informational writing and wrapping up our Science with a unit test.

Happy last week before Thanksgiving Break! We have lots of exciting things to look forward to!

Last week students finished reading thier "Book Club" books so this week we will have an in-class project. They will be given time in class Monday-Thursday and it will become homework only if they have not finished. We are also wrapping up Topic 5 in Math and have our test on Friday. See above with resources to help your student with long division.

On Thursday your students will get to shadow middle school! This will be an exciting day where they get to experience two different middle school elective classes.

As Friday is the last day before break, students are welcome to bring a small snack/treat to share. I will be sending a sign-up sheet for a few small items if you would like to contribute.

Continue to encourage your student to go through their gray folder each week so they can see areas they may be making reoccuring mistakes and areas they are excelling in.

10/30/2023

I can't believe it is already the second quarter! I am so proud of your student's hard work and all they have accomplished the last couple of months. I have had some much fun getting to know this class better each day and I am grateful for each and every one of them!

There are a few changes in 5th grade now that we are entering the second quarter. The most notable is that points will be taken off of late assignments. If an assignment is less than one week late, 25% will be deducted. If it more than a week late, it can be turned in for up to 50% credit. Assignments will not be accepted if they are over a month late. I will be discussing these changes with your student but please have a conversation about it at home as well. Late assignments can be a huge detriment to your student's overall grade.

Please keep in mind that school is out at noon every day this week as we have parent teacher conferences.

Happy last week of the quarter! I am so excited for all of your student's hard work so far this school year. To celebrate, we have so many exciting events this week!

The end of quarter is this Friday, October 27th. Grades are closing this week so the last day I can accept fix-its or late work is Wednesday, October 25th. The following week, Oct 30-November 3 are parent-teacher conferences. This means school will be out at noon every day. Please refer to the email sent to you about your conference time.

As it is the last week of the quarter, there will be no spelling or Bible quizzes this week!!! We will be having our Science Unit 1 Test this week on Wednesday, October 25th (this is updated from last week). Also on Wednesday, we will be getting to spend time with our Kindergarten buddies. On Friday, October 27th, we have a field trip to see the CYT play "Matilda". Students will bring a small snack with them and we will be back on-campus in time for lunch. Please have your student wear or bring something BLUE to wear on Friday as we  are hoping to have a surprise class activity....

The end of quarter is quickly approaching! Please read emails about parent-teacher conferences to confirm your time slot. If you are unable to attend at that time, let me know so we can find a new slot. Also, we have another field trip right around the corner! We will be attending a CYT play on Friday, October 27th. Permission slips were emailed home earlier last week.

Grades are updated regularly so please check Gradelink to monitor your student's progress. The last day I will be accepting late work or fix-its is Wednesday, October 25th. If you notice that your student is often receiving their graded work marked as "late," please help them come up with a game plan to try and avoid this the next quarter. As a reminder, beginning 2nd quarter, the late-work policy will begin to be implemented.

Students are continuing to work on a rough draft of their personal narratives and begin typing their final draft this week. I ask that they take these home to edit throughout the week. Their final essay (typed) will be due on Wednesday, October 18th. This week we will begin Topic 4 for Math and will be completing our 8-week Science unit. Students will be given a study guide this week for their test on Tuesday, October 24th.

Bible Verse:

No verse this week; but here is what I want our class to focus on this year:

God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind.

Some of my favorite bible verses:

"But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble." Psalm 46:1
