California State Landmark Project

For this project, you will choose and research a California state landmark. First, you will submit your first, second, and third choices to me, and I will make sure that there are no duplicates in the class. This will be done in class. Once your landmark is selected, you will write a multiple-paragraph essay addressing the following questions:
· Where is it located?
· What are its special features?
· How does it represent its community?
· What is the importance of the monument or landmark?
There will be enough time in class to complete a draft of your research report. We will type our reports in class. All written portions of the project will be completed during class.
MODEL- You will also make a model of your chosen state landmark. The model should be small enough to carry and fit on a student's desk (16 x 24 in). It should be designed and created by you with limited support and guidance from parents as necessary. You are encouraged to be creative with your use of materials. The model will be completed outside of the school day.

Presentation Rubric- Students will be graded on a 1-5 scale. 5, being the most points possible, for their project presentation in the following areas.
Project was clearly defined
Information was organized, neat, and prepared
Presence- comfort level, stance, poise, eye contact
Expression- spoke clearly, delivery, tempo
2nd Quarter Book Report
Cereal Box Book Report
Second quarter book report: Students need to choose a chapter book; a graphic novel is fine. This includes a book that is grade-level appropriate and challenging enough for your child. This book must be a book that has been read THIS school year, independently, at home. The book cannot be a book we have read at school as a novel study. The book selection needs to be approved on or before Wednesday, December 10th. After your book has been approved, there are NO switching books. Please fill out the half sheet of paper with your book choice and return it to your teacher.
Once your book has been approved, get started! Attached to this packet are the directions and supplies you will need to create your own Cereal Box Book Report. Please save a cereal box between now and when the project is due. Projects are due in class on Wednesday, January 6th. This project should be completed at home and brought to school on the due date, not before. Students are encouraged to be creative. All work should be done by the student, with little help from parents. Students should be prepared to give an oral presentation to the class on their chosen book.
