OVERVIEW and PHILOSOPHY

This is the cover page for my webpages.  There will be a webpage for each course that I teach (the links are above).

I am currently teaching Accelerated Chemistry, Physics and Accelerated Physics.

My goal in each of these classes is to develop independent and resourceful students.  These classes are inherently difficult and will require work outside the school day.  I encourage my students to seek help (from me or others) if they do not understand.

About me

I was born and have lived most of my life in Troy, OH.  I did live briefly in Kalamazoo, MI, Richmond, KY and Van Wert, OH.

I am a Troy High School Graduate (1983).  I earned my Bachelor's degree from Eastern Kentucky University (1988) and my Master's degree from the University of Dayton (1994).

My teaching experiences involve teaching chemistry and physics at Parkway HS (1988-89), Tippecanoe HS (1989-97), Troy HS (1997-99) and back to Tippecanoe HS (1999-Present).  I have been the THS science department chair since 2000.

I am proud of what we have accomplished as a school during my 30 years at THS.  We have developed into one of the premier public schools in the Dayton Area.  I hope we can keep this tradition alive through teaching Respect, Responsibility, Resourcefulness and academic Rigor.

After 22 years of marriage, I lost my wife, Ellen, to cancer in 2012.  We had two sons together, Chase (1989) and Cooper (1995).  I am currently married (in 2021) to Jane Karns, my HS sweetheart.  We reside in Troy where she and I enjoy our seven grandchildren (5 girls and 2 boys).
