WOTW: Self-regulation
The research: Self-regulated learning can be broken into three essential components: cognition - the mental process involved in knowing, understanding, and learning; metacognition - often defined as ‘learning to learn’; and motivation - willingness to engage our metacognitive and cognitive skills. (Educational Endowment Foundation) Training pupils in these is easier said than done. Pupils’ first instincts are often to put up their hands to ask for help or, conversely, many don’t seek help when they should. This tip from the Mrs Humanities blog can help foster learners’ self-regulation by signposting them to, but not directly providing them with the support they might need.
