The Health and Social Care course starts in Year 9. It allows the students to develop the skills and knowledge required to move onto a career in Health and Social Care.
The aim of the course is to provide the students with an insight into the world of Health and Social care and establish how Individuals grow, develop and change over their lifetime. The lessons are designed to be based on real life scenarios which will engage and create a natural curiosity for the subject.
Year 9 to Year 11

Exam board: Pearson BTEC
The students will complete Component 1 in Year 9, Component 2 and an assignment in Year 10. During Year 11, they will complete Component 3, an assignment and a written exam.
Unit 1: Human lifespan development. This unit covers the ways individuals grow, develop and change across the different life-stages. It will look at the changes in the following areas: Physical development, Emotional development, Intellectual development, Language development, Social development. The students will then go on to explain how different life events can impact the developmental areas mentioned above.
Unit 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values. This unit covers the different services within the health and social care sector and how they can be accessed. The students will learn how different factors, for example geographical, can impact an individual’s ability to access the services they require. They will develop further knowledge of what the health and social care sector has done to overcome this. The second half of this unit covers the different health and social care values and how to promote these in a positive way.
Unit 3: Health and Wellbeing. This unit allows the students to link Units 1 and 2 and expand on them using different scenarios. It also covers the different types of health indicators and how they are used to determine good or poor health. The students will use these indicators to provide health plans for individuals in the case studies .
