Knowledge for College

Great turn outs for our students attending and meeting up with some amazing colleges and fantastic advisors! This month we had Grand Canyon University, Texas Tech, and A&M come and visit us.

Aiden Nickle went to see GCU present and had this to say, “GCU is located in Phoenix Arizona and is a private christian college. The tuition is relatively cheap and the teacher to student ratio is about 25:1. Most students end up staying on campus all four years, including holiday seasons. GCU has division one sports programs and they do have sports clubs. Studies are always the number one priority though.” He also stated more facts about why a smaller school isn't a bad thing. “Bigger colleges, like A&M or UT, you will almost never see your professor because of their research to earn funding for the college/university, but at GCU the professors have a certain amount of hours that they have to teach and time to spend with students.”

A&M advisors came to our campus September 14th to teach our high schoolers about the campus. This is what Mckenzie Stenholm had to say about A&M “If you get into the top 10% of your class you automatically get admitted into A&M and if not your application will go through a holistic review process. The student to teacher ratio, 21:1, is rather small for an enrollment size of 74,829 as of the fall 2022 semester.”

Practically Purple

Where exactly did the idea of practically purple start you ask? Well In 2021 they gave Mrs. Barton the business practicum class, she had 4 kids and asked what they wanted to do and they brought up the idea to create a school spirit shop. A lot of people in the community wanted to be able to purchase spirit items but there was not really a place to purchase them from. The students in Mrs. Barton’s class developed the whole concept and created a business plan. They took it to admin with a presentation, and successfully got a loan from administration to start the business.

Practically Purple has shown growth in product from 2021 to now. Now they have more resources available such as a t-shirt machine and 2 vinyl cricket machines able to create signs. Along with a laser engraver to be able to engrave on wood. This is a huge impact on being able to create so many new products bringing in more profits to the company.

We asked a student in Practically Purple what has been the most exciting project in their opinion that they have worked on so far. They loved making these simple, but very cute wreaths which turned out to be a huge success. The first day they had already received 10 orders. Other three very popular items include circle/keychain bag tags, cowbells, and earrings as seen below

They also just recently brought back spirit ribbons.

CTE at Work

The agricultural mechanics and metal technology courses have recently finished shop safety training ,and have begun practicing welding in the shop. They are currently using 6010 rods and learning how to strike an Ark and run a bead. The goal of this is for the students to learn how to weld ,so they can build projects in the future as well as pass an AWS D 1.1 or D 9.1 welding certification test in the spring.

SPORTS

Cross Country goes to TAMUCC

The Thrall High School cross-country team hits the salty shores of Corpus Christi. The Tigers and Tigerettes went and competed at the Islander Splash at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Two athletes that competed in the meet were Sarah Laurence and Kayla Pouncey. We asked them some questions about their experience and how they thought the meet went, Kayla Pouncey stated, “It was a different experience than what we were used to, but I think it was a good challenge and learning opportunity. Not everyone got the results they were hoping for, but we all had a fun time bonding with each other”. Her teammate Sarah Lawrence said, “It was hot and humid, but the actual course itself is nice and good practice for the regionals meet. As a team, I think we did pretty well considering the conditions. Overall it was a great time to bond and grow as a team. Thrall Cross Country had a really great time competing at Corpus Christi and are looking forward to getting ready for the district meet on October 7th.

Tigerette Volleyball

The 2023 volleyball season has a young team. Coach Grissom says “it's refreshing and fun to have new faces that are coachable.” Despite having a young team they “play together as a team and get along very well.” Grissom said. “This is the best team we've had in all the time I've been here.” Casey George said. The Tigerettes are hoping to sweep the district. The last set they've ever lost in district was in 2021.

ThE VB Student Section

“We have the best student section around”, SS Leader, Rylan West said. The student section has themes and dresses up to support the volleyball team to help them win. “The energy and interaction is unmatched.”

The Historic Battle of 79

The Battle of 79 has been going on for over 95 years and is still as strong as ever. One of the oldest rivals In the state of Texas is played between the two towns of Thorndale and Thrall. The record for the two teams is Thorndale has 30 wins over Thrall, giving Thrall 59 losses and 3 ties between the two. Back when the rival first began in 1925, Thrall and Thorndale were both 1A in classification size. Loyal Tiger fan and Biology teacher Casey Georg said, “The rivalry has always been super cutthroat but some of the spark has died down in recent years. I think their (Thorndale) main target has been Holland since they got the new head coach.” Almost a hundred years later there have been many great games along the way. Most recently the ‘21 game on October 21st in Thrall which ended in a Thrall victory in overtime 42-35. The battle of 79 is not just a football rivalry, it carries over into all sports and local society.  But the rivalry seems to not be coming to an end anytime soon but may see a change in schedule due to Thrall's anticipated reclassification.

The Tigers head down to Thorndale on October 20th to renew the rivalry. Let's pack the stands.
