As readers, the children will explore a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts. We will further deepen our understanding by answering a range of comprehension questions, based on the text we have read.

As writers, the children will continue to secure key learning skills from Year 2. In addition to this, we will use a range of grammar skills to write an alternative story to "The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark".

As mathematicians, the children will learn how to interpret and construct simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and simple tables. The children will then begin to use and apply their skills of working with small numbers as they learn written methods of addition and subtraction within 100. Next half term, we will move on to explore the concepts of multiplication and division, which will include learning and memorising facts from the 2-, 5- and 10-times tables. It would be great if you could support your children at home by encouraging them to count objects and money in twos, fives and tens.

As scientists, the children will learn about how to identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard for particular uses. They also learn how to find out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.

As Historians, the children will learn about The Space Race which led to The First Moon Landing 1969. They will then compare the expedition to the moon with another famous expedition to develop their historical understanding.

The children will have Forest School every Wednesday this term (weather permitted). Please could you ensure that your child has a pair of wellies or old trainers in school for Forest School lessons and come to school with a warm coat.

We are also continuing our drive to encourage more children to read for pleasure. Research shows a positive link between reading frequency and enjoyment and educational attainment. Please continue to support your children by reading with them daily, discussing their reading and ensuring time is set aside for reading.
