Accelerated Reader

We use the Accelerated Reader to support children in choosing their reading books according to their reading journey.  A child reads a book within their range, takes an online quiz on it and gets immediate feedback. Parents can access online details and levels of books, so they can be confident it is at the correct level for their child.

Book Levels

Book level represents the difficulty of the text. Book levels are determined using the ATOS readability formula. For example, a book level of 4.5 means the text could likely be read independently by a typical fourth-year pupil in the fifth month of school. The content of the book, however, may or may not be appropriate. The interest level will gives a recommendation of the appropriateness of the content.

Each class from year 2 takes a short on-line test to help the teachers assess their up-to-date reading level. Children then receive a recommended reading range.  The range could be considered a ‘Goldilocks range’ – children may find books at the beginning of the range quite easy to read, books in the middle are just right and they may need some assistance with books at the end of the range.

Interest Levels

The interest level attached to the book indicates age group appropriateness. Interest level is based on a book's content including theme, characterisation and plot. The interest levels are based on the recommendations of the publisher and/or literary book reviews by professional organisations. However, the final decision on whether the content of a book is appropriate for a particular child is left to parents and teachers.

To help you choose the books most appropriate for your children, Accelerated Reader Quizzes are divided into four interest levels:

LY (Lower Years, Ages 5–8),

MY (Middle Years, Ages 9–13),

MY+ (Middle Years Plus, Ages 12 and above),

UY (Upper Years, Ages 14 and above)

No Book Quiz - Don't Worry

We want children to develop a love of reading.  If they wish to read a book that does not have a quiz then that’s fine.
