Summer 2026
Year 1
Year 1
Uniform: In the summer term we will endeavour to use the canopied area but given it is in the shade, it may be cool and require a coat. Unless it is forecast to be hot, humid and sunny all day, please continue to ensure your child has a light coat/raincoat with them. Please make sure any jumpers and coats are named, as jumpers in particular are likely to be off more than they are on when we are indoors!
If the weather requires suncream, please apply this before your child comes to school. Children can reapply cream themselves at lunchtime if needed. Please ensure your child has a named cap or sunhat if/when the weather requires it.
Reading Ribbon Race: Please continue to read regularly with your child, and tick their reading ribbon. Remember, this can be ticked whenever they read to you or share the reading of a book with you. Any book they read counts towards this, not just school books. The children enjoy earning a house point every Monday if they have at least 4 ticks on their reading ribbon. They also enjoy earning their extra playtime.
Thank you! Miss Monk.
Please continue to help your child with their spelling by asking them to verbally recall how to spell tricky words using letter names (like we say when we sing the alphabet). I will be continuing to add some tricky word spelling sheets in their RWI folders for extra practice.
Similarly, when a 'part' is missing we can always subtract to find the missing number, even when the starting calculation is addition. E.g. 6 + ? = 10 can be solved using 10 - 6.
We will continue learning about different units of measurement: mass and volume, money, and time (o'clock/half past).
Also, we will expand our geometry knowledge by covering position and direction.
We will start some new topics entirely like looking at fractions of numbers and shapes, as well as multiplication and division after the half term.
Next half-term we will learn about animals and how they are grouped into categories such as 'mammals' 'reptiles' 'birds', 'fish' and 'amphibians'. We will learn about the characterisitics of each animal group.
Tuesday will continue to be outside.
Forest School will be every THURSDAY afternoon. We will continue to use this time to support our Science/Geography learning and development of gross motor skills, as well as collaboraive learning with our classmates. Children will need their wellies, (named please!), and can wear their PE kit or old school uniform on that day. If you would like, your child can wear a PLAIN, blue/dark coloured tshirt on that day too.
