Dear Parents and Carers,
We hope you enjoyed coming in for the open classes last week. It was great to see so many of you.
Thursday 5th March is World Book Day, however we will not be dressing up on World Book Day this year. Instead, children are invited to dress up as a book character for our Reading Café which is on Friday 6th March at 8.30am. Costumes are completely optional and any child not wishing to dress up should come to school in their school uniform.
All the children will receive their World Book Day book tokens in school. A digital version is also available below.
If any parents, grandparents or family members would like to come in and share a story with a class or a small group of children, we would love to welcome you. Please contact Mrs Lilley via e-mailing jlilley@thorngrove.herts.sch.uk or your child’s class teacher to arrange a suitable time. This invitation is open any day, not just World Book Day - because enjoying stories and celebrating reading is something we value all year round.
The start of a school day is not the best time to discuss with your teacher, your child's needs or any issues there may be. All such discussions should be done via email, telephone call or an arranged meeting. All staff e-mails can be found on the school website.
The parent Consultation booking system is now open. To book a slot on your preferred day and time please click on the link thorngroveparentseveningsystem.co.uk
Login with the following information: Student’s First Name/Student’s Surname/Student’s Date of Birth
If you have problems please contact the school office.
Building on the success of previous Heritage Days in June we will again be celebrating the cultures represented within our school community.
To help this event be a success please complete the short survey which will be sent out soon.
Please be mindful of what your child is watching or is exposed to via gaming or on the internet. We are continually hearing comments and seeing images being drawn that are not appropriate for children in a primary school setting.
Class attendances the week before half term (highest to lowest):
Year 1 - 97.9%
Year 6 - 97.3%
Year 2 - 96.0%

The NSPCC’s guidance on children, mobile phones and online safety is a useful resource that addresses one of the most common questions that are asked: when is a child ready for a phone, and how can families manage the risks? The guide offers balanced, practical advice on readiness, boundary-setting, parental controls, and ongoing conversations about safe and responsible use.

The PTA are excited to launch our Coin Wars fundraising competition, running from 2nd March – 20th March!
Each class will have its own collection pot, and children are invited to bring in loose change to help their class raise as much money as possible for our school.
How does it work?
- Every classroom has a collection pot.
- Children can add any British coins (1p–£2).
- Every contribution counts — big or small!
- All money raised will go towards PTA projects that benefit the whole school.
⭐️ How is the winning class chosen?
The winning class will be the one that collects the highest total value of money by the end of the competition (not the number of coins).
🏆 Prize: The winning class will enjoy a special Break the Rules Day!
A few reminders:
- British currency only please (no foreign coins).
- Coins can be brought in throughout the competition dates.
- Participation is completely optional — all donations are appreciated.
Let the friendly competition begin, and thank you as always for supporting the PTA and helping us create exciting opportunities for the children!

Each digital token is single use per transaction, but schools can share the same token with all parents and carers. The same PDF and barcode can be used for every child within the school.
Digital tokens can be shown on a phone or tablet to a participating bookseller.
