Learn how to argue a legal case with the team from Qatar University Law! This workshop centres around how to argue for or against the death penalty. This is an important yet controversial subject due to its irreversible nature. Proponents of the death penalty argue that the nature of offences committed requires and justify the punishment. Critics argue that it does not deter crime, it’s discriminatory and mistakes happen. Qatar no longer implements the death penalty but still has it listed as a possible punishment for certain crimes. Therefore, when a murder is committed in Qatar, the convicted perpetrator will receive a life sentence in prison, even if sentenced to death. This debate will encourage students to discuss and debate this controversial subject, the goals of punishments, when, if ever, the death penalty is justified, and whether laws should be amended to drop the death penalty if it is not actually utilized by the state. Debating and discussing are two very important skills needed for law students to be able to pursue a legal career and this workshop should inspire future law students.
