According to Greek mythology, Pygmalion was a king and a sculptor who fell in love with an ivory sculpture he carved. Enamoured by it, he was unable to fall in love with a human and appealed to Aphrodite, Goddess of love, who took pity on him and brought the statue to life. In 1986, Rosenthal and Jacobson performed an intense study which showed that teacher expectations influence student performance and described this phenomenon as “The Pygmalion Effect”.
Rosenthal’s study survived an extraordinary storm of controversy to become one of the most inspiring and widely cited breakthroughs in the history of psychology. Nowadays, the “Pygmalion effect” usually refers to the fact that people, often children ,students or employees, turn to live up to what’s expected of them and they tend to do better when treated as if they are capable of success. The effect is a pretty powerful secret weapon, which can be applied across different aspects of our lives such as in classrooms or the workplace.
Join us in our workshop as we explore the power of Pygmalion Effect and its key features, which can be used to nudge others to success. We hope that you will leave the session knowing not only the importance of this effect but also how to make the best of this phenomenon in your daily lives.
ALMAS PALIKOP, Student, Birla Public School, is a senior year student from India, residing in Qatar. She is an active debater who has participated in eight MUN conferences as a delegate, two as a chair and one as a member of the Secretariat. Having attended QLC’19, Almas was awe-inspired by the various speakers that were present and decided to host her very own session! Apart from her 2 year long MUN career, she often volunteers at local healthcare institutions and uses her time efficiently in charity, as an initiative to give back to the society that has raised her. She is an aspiring pre-med student and with her experience in diplomacy and debate, Almas looks forward to pursuing medicine and later working with the UN. She spends quite a fraction of her time binge-in tv shows (she’ll love you if you’ve watched grey’s anatomy) and loves to travel, hoping to visit every single country one day! As a person, she is very chatty and is always up for a fun and insightful conversation!
Through QLC’20, Almas looks forward to meeting people who share the same thoughts and passion as her and hopes that this conference will provide her with something to reflect upon.

Sarah Arshad is a 16 year old student who is currently studying in Grade 12 at Birla Public School, Doha-Qatar.
She has only recently stepped out of her comfort zone to attend such events and QLC 2019 as her first ever conference experience. She has since then realized that such experiences would help her to meet new people, be more social, and broaden her horizons on various topics and has been trying to grab every opportunity she can.
She is quite ambitious and will stand up for what she believes in. She is passionate about the things she loves and is not afraid to express her thoughts.
Sarah loves learning about different cultures of the world which has lead to her having a keen interest in different languages. She can fluently speak 3 languages currently and is working on adding a few more to her repertoire. She has also been fortunate enough to visit many places such as China, The US, Europe, Turkey, Malaysia and so on. And of course, like every other student her age, she is still figuring out life as it goes on and works hard on trying to be the best version of herself.
