The year 2020 will always be remembered as the year when a pandemic struck on an international level, and affected a multitude of people. For others, it will be remembered as the year when a new style of conferencing, debating, and advocating began, entirely student led. This workshop focuses on the successes, failures, and demonstration of an Online MUN Conference, known as Quarantined Model United Nations (QMUN). This conference was established by Asma Muhammad and Elina Kalmouni. Through the theme of “one small step,” delegates became more aware of local and international issues, and came together to debate from various parts of the world. This conference, amidst a growing pandemic, has proven to us all that this generation of MUN participants will stop at nothing to remain motivated and inspired to combat crucial issues globally.
Elina Kalmouni is a year 12 student currently studying in Doha British School (DBS). Model United Nations has been a paramount part of her life for most of her secondary education. She has participated in MUN conferences as a delegate and a student officer. MUN has enlightened her about crucial issues prevalent around the globe, and has allowed her to utilize it as a platform to voice her thoughts. As an active Karate player, Elina enjoys her time participating in competitions as well as receiving awards, such as “Best Female”. In her free time, she loves reading about the history of philosophy, and learning about various cultures around the world. Such hobbies have proven to Elina how important it is to remain motivated and driven throughout her life. She strives to highlight the importance of not only MUN, but other extracurriculars that highlight how crucial it is for adolescents to become more aware of detrimental issues around the world. Elina has undertaken the role of Secretary General of DBSMUN, and this year is the Head of Conferences. These roles have undeniably allowed her to flourish as an individual, but also realize that our generation is highly capable of change and reform. Furthermore, she, alongside a fellow student, initiated an Online MUN conference called Quarantined Model United Nations (QMUN). She wants to highlight the success of this conference, and how hard times are merely stepping stones for success. She is a firm believer in pursuing personal dreams, goals and aspirations, and further highlights this in her workshop about Online MUN.
