En garde, prêts? ALLEZ! That is the starting command in fencing, the sport that rose out of the ancient sword fighting and one of the first sports in the modern Olympics. It is a highly tactical, fast-paced, combat sport. This workshop will take you through the key moments in fencing history, with its countless successes and failures, to show you exactly how it evolved and adapted to changing times to become the thrilling sport it is now. Then, we will take a deeper look at the myriad of benefits this sport can give you, leaving behind important lessons regarding controlling and harnessing your mind to achieve your goals. Finally, we will look to the future, where this sport is going and how it can be used to create change. Through the presentation, participants will be learn some of the fundamental ways sport, and especially fencing can alter your mindset, be inspired to overcome obstacles, follow their passion and hopefully learn a little about the sport named “physical chess”
In this workshop I will be talking about some of my experiences in the sport of fencing all the way from a beginner to a National medalist. Over the last 5 years, I have fallen in love with this sport and it has taught me many things about myself and about life. Through this journey of highs and lows, my life has changed drastically. I would begin by spending some time introducing the mystery that is fencing and the long journey it has gone through to evolve into its form today. I will also explain its unique blend of mental and physical needs, earning it the title physical chess. Then, I will talk about how many different aspects of fencing facilitates character building and teaches you valuable lessons that has impacted my life and will hopefully impact yours. One component would be how the different stresses of competition and training affected me and more importantly, how to recognize these, persevere and finally succeed. Through the medium of this complex sport and my countless failures and successes, I hope to inspire everyone to overcome and achieve in whatever their passion might be.
Aditri Patil is a Grade 11 student at the American School of Doha who is passionate about creating change in her communities. She is the head of the composting branch at her school's environmental club, EFFECT. Her committee composts over 230 kilos of food waste every week. She is also passionate about biology and debating and is a member of the National Honor Society. She also joined MUN recently to go on to participate in ASDMUN, THIMUN and various MUN@home conferences. While balancing school and extracurriculars, she is also an international fencer representing India. With a long background in sports, she started fencing in 2016, and in the past 5 years she has risen to become a U14 and U17 national gold medallist. Through those qualifications she participates in various international circuits and championships like the Cadet Asian championship in 2018 where she ranked 18th. She is also the 3 year reigning Qatar champion for both her and the senior age categories. Few of the other international competitions she’s won at are gold at the U14 Thailand open championship and silver in the Jordan Cadet Championship. She also started certification to be a referee and has taught classes. Over these last 5 years she has learnt much about the many different aspects of fencing and has also accumulated insights into how the game can fundamentally build and change your character. She hopes to share her knowledge and expertise on this fascinating sport to give others a peek into the intricacies of the game.
